Title: NVIDA H264 Codec
Post by: Beeker on February 15, 2010, 02:23:37 pm
I am running a core and MD both with NVIDA 7600GS video cards which under XP will playback my home videos which are 30Mb bit rate .m2ts files but under linuxmce the videos are in slow motion though the sound is fine also some of them have horz lines through them, is it time to upgrade to newer 9 series video cards to overcome this. Currently running 810 b2 with NVIDA 195.36 drivers...any advice is always much appreciated

Beeker, i have the same 7600GS and have no problems with video playback.

Are you streaming on the MD over the network or on the core/hybrid? In other words, where are your video files located.... NAS, internal drive, etc...

Are you running 100Mb network? if so maybe time to upgrade :)

Hi Richard,
Great news that someone has a 7600GS working I assume from your post that you can watch high bit rate HD videos without problems,

I am running gigabit lan, and it does the same on the core/hybrid or streaming to the md. I thought the 7600GS would be fine so I am not sure where the issue is as I can play back any other types of files with out problems. I have also set the file type as Blu-ray but this made no difference and have tried all the video card accelerations as well. The files are on the core in a software raid 5 with 5 x 1.5TB Seagate HDD's

Hi Richard,
Just some further info I can play 30Mbit mpegs on the core and across the network on the other md so it must be something to do with the H264 codec that my Panasonic HD camera uses that MCE does not like........if anybody has any feedback that would be appreciated

Hi Beeker,
are you running .m2ts files on lmce with sound? Could you tell me how did you get sound under mplayer?
Cheers,
Paulo

Hi Paulo,
Have not done anything special when I did my install, so I couldn't tell you if it is using mplayer or xine when playing pack the .m2ts files, I just click on them and they worked straight away apart from the video issue. Do you know how to configure the players and tell which one is being used, maybe then I can check my configuration settings and fix my video issue and if I can work that out it might give us a clue as to why you have no sound.

Cheers

Hi Beeker,
i just asked because you could have configured mplayer (.mplayer/config), and in this case, i would ask you for you config.
When using .m2ts, mplayer is used instead of xine, according to the wiki.
Thx for answering.

Douglas_fr, i renamed the .mks file to .m2ts, and it played, but without sound (video and subtitles worked well).

Cheers,
Paulo

this is going to be interesting.
I'm having some mkvs, which won't play at all. I renamed them to m2ts and they do play, but the sound gets out of synch.

Hi Maverick,
My mkv files would not play under 710 and when I upgraded to 810 b2 they would play but had no sound but after having to do another rebuild over the weekend for other reasons now all my mkv files play perfectly with sound, so all I need to do is get my m2ts files working and I will be a happy Vegemite. If someone can tell me how to check my xine and mplayer configurations I could post those and it may be helpful.

Cheers

Hi Beeker,
the configuration for mplayer is the ~/.mplayer/config and for xine, ~/.xine/config, under linux operating system (in our case, under kubuntu 8.10).
For mplayer, take a look at: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-77329.html
Now, for lmce, xine config is /etc/pluto/xine.conf and mplayer, i don't know yet.... i guess it will be /root/.mplayer/config, but i need to research.
The other issue for me is where to define the default player, for ALL video media, so playing avi, mpeg, mkv, wmv and m2ts uses mplayer instead of xine (which may work well but with issues regarding subtitles). But first i have to solve the sound issue, finding the config file and testing. And testing if it uses the standard (video.avi with video.srt, instead of video.avi and video.avi.srt).
Cheers,
Paulo

For subtitles or other configuration change on pluto-xine, the MD MUST be rebuilt, even if it's the hybrid. The orbiter also must regenerated.
So, remaining is the mplayer sound configuration for H264.

I'm not at home right now but I have AAC multi-channel audio over SPDIF working in mplayer from the command line, havn't figured out where/how to put the config to work from LMCE yet.  I'll post what I have done when I get home later today, maybe you can take it the next step.

I don't recall where I found this, it works well with mplayer from the command line for AVC/AAC encoded material on my Zotac ION 330 with vdpau.  I don't know what this does under lmce as I havn't tested that yet.  This should work properly with AVC/MPEG1&2/WMV/VC1 video encoded media and AAC/AC3/DTS encoded media.

If your on the core you would need to create ~/.mplayer/config and on an MD this would be /root/.mplayer/config instead.  The file I use looks like this:
Code: [Select]
#Set Video output to VDPAU and use appropriate codecs
vo=vdpau
vc=ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,ffvc1vdpau
# Set AC3/DTS PASSTHROUGH and ON THE FLY AC3 RE-ENCODING FOR 6 CHANNEL AAC FILES
ao=alsa:device=hw=0.1
afm=hwac3
channels=6
af=scaletempo,lavcac3enc=1:640:3

This is the only way I have found to on-the-fly re-encode AAC multi-channel encoded files to AC3 so my optical SPDIF connection will pass the surround sound properly.  Without this you would require an HDMI audio connection to pass AAC multi-channel audio properly.

Anyways, I'm not entirely sure if this helps you or not but there it is.

Try commenting out the final line.

Are you running mplayer from LMCE or the command line?

Hi Phenigma,
IT WORKS. And with mplayer, there is no need to rebuild the MD and regenerate the orbiter.
I did try on a mkv file (after renaming to m2ts), which did not output sound before and a mp4 file (after renaming to m2ts). Both did load subtitles, played sound.
I'm now running mplayer from linuxmce with sound and subtitles.
Thank you very much. I will continue to test and will give feedback.
BTW, is there a way to define the filetypes to be used by mplayer? For pluto-xine, i know is possible to add or remove filestypes (extensions) to/from the database.

I have some where I got sound but no video too.
Title: Re: NVIDA H264 Codec

All my video files output video, some of them didn't output sound and with Phenigma' s hint, all i tested yesterday did output sound. The mp4 and some mvk i needed to rename to m2ts.
With me, pluto-xine crashed when trying to open mp4 files, and after renaming tmp4 to m2ts, mplayer under linuxmce played it., and with Phenigma's hint, with sound.

I'll try some more when I come home. So I have some mkv that play fine, others play only in mplayer- renamed to m2ts, but badly out of synch....my guess was that this might have something to do with vdpau not working correctly with mplayer...but thats just a shot in the dark on my part

Stupid questions guys
I am assuming my MD is using xine as the default player for my m2ts files and that's why it is having trouble playing the HD 1920 x 1080 home movies with the video in slow motion but the sound is perfect.

So how would I make the default player as mplayer as this may fix my problem....what's everybody's thoughts on this as the actual hardware will play the content quite happily if I boot the MD back into XP

Any advice greatly appreciated
Cheers

VDPAU works great in mplayer on my Zotac ION 330.  Playing through a network I have had to add a buffer '-cache 8192' I think does it at the command line, this can probably be added to the config file.

Xine is the default player for almost all media in LMCE.  Xine can play 1080P content with VDPAU acceleration with no problem.  Your MD should be playing m2ts files should with mplayer by default.

So how would I make the default player as mplayer as this may fix my problem....

This I'm not sure of and it is certainly not recommended as LMCE doesn't have full control of mplayer.

Thanks J for the quick reply and I have tried with VDPAU and it just plays the H264 content in slow motion so it's got me buggered why. Can't understand how the same hardware under XP plays the content fine but not 810b2

The 7600GS doesn't support VDPAU acceleration.  Just because hardware works in Windows doesn't mean that it will work in Linux, software drivers are very different and there are different levels of compatibility under Linux than Windows because of this.

Turn off the VDPAU, your system should be failing back to OpenGL anyways.  You will have to remove the 'vo=...' and 'vc=...' section of the mplayer config file as well.  The system will then rely on your CPU for the decoding and it will need to be hefty to do a good job with h264 media.  Do some searching on the forums there have been discussions about non-vdpau requirements for 1080P playback.

My immediate recommendation would be to ditch the 7600GS and get an 8xxx or 9xxx card with VDPAU acceleration.  Havn't looked myself but I remember posts where people have said a PCI-e 9xxx something or other could be had for around $30.

Check out nvidia's vdpau hardware compatibility list: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/190.53/README/appendix-a.html

Are you running mplayer from kde or linuxmce? i can run it on both.....
Is it happening with all files or with only a few?
Did you test these files on a kubuntu only environmet with mplayer?

I tested it only in linuxmce and my windowsbox. So far this only happens with a few files and I think those are also ac3 encoded.

May i suggest, if you have a kubuntu only environment, that you test them with mplayer (if you wish with smplayer), to see if it works.
You can also try under kde (on linuxmce). Try it also with kaffeine.
I think this can help isolate the problem, as i did.... and after that, audio will be the issue, but with Phenigma's hint, it's easier....

So I tried this on my Zotac ION under LMCE and mplayer is not using VDPAU acceleration under LMCE.  I checked in the svn and the video values below are currently hard-coded into MPlayer_Player.  The wiki says the functionality was added in Beta2 "Update 2009-12-06 22569" but the code doesn't appear to be in svn.  So no VDPAU with mplayer under LMCE currently.  MPlayer is using xv and can't keep the video in sync with the audio.

On the up side the af options and the channels option in the config appear to work with mplayer to enable the on-the-fly ac3 re-encode.

Code: [Select]
root@moon40:~/.mplayer# ps ax | grep mplayer
  833 pts/11   S+     0:00 grep mplayer
30686 pts/9    Rl+    1:45 mplayer -slave -idle -msglevel all=4 -noborder -fixed-vo -fs -vo xv,x11 -vf screenshot -ao alsa:device=asym_spdif -ac hwac3,hwdts,a52, -lavdopts fast:threads=2 /usr/pluto/share/black.mpeg

the reason IT did not compile is because  you miss a change in Gen_devices. IT should include à declaration of the two failing methods.

Rebuilding the MD will remove the ~/.mplayer/config file and it will need to be re-created.  But it sounds like mplayer is not running at all though...  You shouldn't be rebuilding your MD so often, it reverts it to it's initial installation without upgrades and bugfixes applied...  Did you upgrade the MD after rebuilding it?

Unfortunately, it did not remove ~/mplayer/config, after rebuilding it, the file /home/paulo/.mplayer/config was there, as i left so as the /root/.mplayer/config.
It seems that mplayer is using vdpau (see the output in my previous message), but something gone weird, because after trying to create a scenario, mplayes does not start under linuxmce (no display, no sound) and under kde, only display, no sound....
Upgrade the MD? How is it done?
When shall the MD be rebuilt? One situation is when xine configs are changed. I learned it at the hard way.

Add the following to MPLayer_PlayerBase.h (it´s located under src/Gen_Devices)

Search for the line below
 string DATA_Get_Name() { return GetData()->Get_Name(); }

And append the two lines below after it.
 string DATA_Get_Hardware_acceleration() { return GetData()->Get_Hardware_acceleration(); }
 string DATA_Get_Deinterlacing_Mode() { return GetData()->Get_Deinterlacing_Mode(); }

You should now be able to build MPlayer_Player and test vdpau.

I´ll add the missing code pieces during the weekend.
Have to test that it build fine before I commit it to svn to be included into lmce build.

/niz23

I figured they needed to be declared but my c++ isn't up to par to know where/how it should be done...  I can read it, just unable to write it effectively yet.

Hia,

Trying to watch the H264 file which previously worked with mplayer, i got the following log. Mplayer starts and crashes.

You should now be able to build MPlayer_Player and test vdpau.

I had to add the actual methods as well as the declarations.  I replicated Get_Name() and found the appropriate constants.  After that it built perfectly.  I copied the .deb to my ION and used dpkg to install it... mplayer is now using the webadmin settings and vdpau acceleration.  MPlayer cpu usage is ~20% showing 1080P h264 and doing on-the-fly re-encoding of multichannel AAC audio to AC3.

Could you send it to me, the .deb?

It says you're missing package dependencies, like mplayer itself.  I`m not sure why it's not installing automatically for you.  It explains why you are getting the mplayer errors you described in a earlier post.

I didn't have to do anything extra on my MD.  You could try installing the missing packages with apt-get and then dpkg -i the mplayer-player package again.

I'd be nice to know why mplayer is not installed on your fresh system though.

The "missing"  packages are installed:
Advanced | Software versions - CORE
mplayer = 2:1.0-svn30383-0ubuntu1
libmysqlclient15off = 5.0.67-0ubuntu6.1
libgcc1 = 1:4.3.2-1ubuntu12
libstdc++6 = 4.3.2-1ubuntu12
libc6 = 2.8~20080505-0ubuntu9
Advanced | Software versions - core/hybrid - No IP for media director selected.
I'm using the core/hybrid. It seems that i need to configure something.. but don' t know where.
If i only have one core/hybrid (did not setup any diskless MD), where shall i inform the IP for the MD?
May this be the problem?

What are you doing?
There is no reason you should need to install mplayer manually unless you have screwed with apt sources.
I have done lot´s of installations and mplayer together with mplayer_player have always installed automatically.

/niz23

What i am doing? Trying to install the package Phenigma created.
I did not screwed anything with apt-sources.
I do have mplayer-player, but with no vdpau support.
I just told that the "missing" files reported by the try to install his package already were installed, and i did not installed them by hand.
Some others i did install, like kaffeine or smplayer and the upgrade of alsa, to 1.0.22.1-2, which apparently solved the HDMI sound output.

The changes are in svn so the next beta update, which the wiki says is building now, should include the new mplayer-player package.  Wait for the update to finish and do an apt-get update/apt-get upgrade on your system.

hi - thanks for your integration of vdpau into mplayer. i will test that today and give you some feedback.

where is this wiki page that tells you about the build process?

Thx J. and niz23,
i was only reporting that the dependencies warned by the package built by J. already were installed.
Sometimes it confuses me having a disklless client in a server (the core/hybrid) and i'm trying to understand where the configs are picked by what, and what is to be done (reload router, regen orbiter, rebuit md).
Yes, i know that i need to wait until update finish to start upgrade or dist-upgrade.
niz23, thx for spendig time and so quickly providing an update.
J., thx for the support and the hint regarding the sound issue.

BTW, did it today, mlayer_player was updated, is using vdpau, but for a .m2ts file, there's still no sound.

works very well - cpu load reduced. mplayer now gets about 24-28% depending on the movie. great work!

there is only one problem when i try to play movies recorded with my video camera (sony HDR-TG7VE). the movie itself is replaying very slowly, the audio in real time. so its getting out of sync in the first second and delays about 2-3 seconds each frame.
tech details: High Definition, AVCHD (1920 x 1080, 1440 x 1080)/Standard Definition, MPEG2

i recorded all the stuff in full HD - do i need to run that through a codec so that i can play it smoothly?

MPEG2 content should be vdpau accelerated through either xine or mplayer.  What container format (File extension) are the files?

The AAC re-encode configuration is not included with the vdpau update, you will still need some portions of the config file I posted for AAC audio over SPDIF.

Previous issue: solved by setting on MD Audio settings to manual configuration (i think it makes a passthru).
VDPAU is working really fine.
All entries at /root/.mplayer/config were comented (no effect).
The only problems remaining are:
1) fast forward: for some files it does not work (no effect, even when displayed SPEED X  4.00)
2) fast back: not working.
3) stop watching the m2ts file makes the last screen remain as the backgroung image.

FireMail:  I am seeing stuttering on 1080P material in LMCE now, I was not getting this before and I do not get this when playing the same titles from the command line.

The only problems remaining are:
1) fast forward: for some files it does not work (no effect, even when displayed SPEED X  4.00)
2) fast back: not working.
3) stopping watching the m2ts file make the last screen remain as the backgoung image.

I see similar issues on 1 & 2 here, pause is also not working.  The orbiter doesn't return when the media ends and the PSS doesn't restart when media ends nor when media is stopped manually.

For AAC audio over SPDIF only the following two lines in ~/.mplayer/config are required.
Code: [Select]
channels=6
af=scaletempo,lavcac3enc=1:640:3

On my system:
Blade Runer 1080p - ok. no suttering.
Pause - not working for any m2ts.
MD -> Audio Settings -> Manual Configuration = no need for /root/.mplayer/config
Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinossaurs 1080p - suttering :(
Julie and Julia - 1080p - stuttering. :(

niz23, any hint regarding ffw, fbw, pause and at stop the last screen remaining as background?

On you core/hybrid or MD? On my core/hybrid, i can play the .m2ts files with sound and video, but on my MD, no video (did not test sound yet). :(

I haven't tried on the core, but on my MD its really a very mixed bag.
So, if the file is not playing as mkv I rename it to m2ts...there its either out of sync or not running at all...while its playing on my windoze box

Trying on hybrid may be a good test. I will try to get a nvidia 8xxx or 9xxx to test and see if what is happening is due MPlayer_player or HW.
Today i try to watch the the movie MPlayer_player refuses with mplayer, and it worked... not perfect but it did, using -vo x11, which is not an option under hardware acceleration tab (webadmin -> media directors). The playback was not perfect, but it worked.... Did not notice sound sync because did not connected the MD to speakers or stereo.....

Hi All,
All you guys have much more Linux cmd line experience then me, is there any simple way to test the different players ie mplayer and xine or vlc to see if my core and md's will play mkv and H264 files as per my previous posts, I am quite happy to go and buy new video cards if that will fix the problem.....my biggest question is that as I am using a 7600GS in both and when these were XP's pc's in previous lifes they played these types of files with out any hesitation so I am curious to find out why they now wont play under MCE

Cheers
Beeker

I have a problem with MKV files playback under 0810. Here is a mplayer log:

did you apt-get update and apt-get updgrade recently?  the latest MPlayer_player with vdpau support is working for me (on my corre/hybrid), on my diskless MD i'm still working to figure out how to make this work, as on this MD i have a geforce 6800 (no vdpau support).
