Title: Could not start ksmserver. Check installation.
Post by: lmwashere on January 28, 2010, 03:43:46 am
I just did a 8.10b2 dvd install and am receiving this error whenever I try to go to the kde desktop. I am turning up nothing when I try to search for this in the forum. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening or where to start on a fix? This is the 3rd time I have done the install and I have had the error every time.

I also do not seem to be able to download or install myth, as a result it fails to start up after a reload.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Josh

I am getting the same with a fresh DVD install tonight... I'm looking for a solution too.

Thanks, Myth is working well now. Ran into a bit of a hiccup with the channel changing but it was because I didn't understand that I needed to pass the device ID and source id to the TuneToChannel script. Once I got that figured out it worked pretty well.

Now just trying to figure out the ksmserver thing.

I'm having the same problem, any solution found?

I am also getting the same problem on my core with my beta install. And myth setup is not in the computing section either.

Did you all do the DVD install? Would the internet install give us better luck? What graphics cards are you using? Just in case that's something to do with it (I use an ATI card on my core).

I did the dvd install and the Download install. Same result for both, other than the ability to install a md with a the download. Nothing seems to work on The md.

I got the same problem, I got my KDE back however by installing kdebase-workspace-bin, but this is not the whole KDE package.

Could it be a problem with the latest version of kde, think I read somewhere, that upgrading to the latest one is causing issues? U guys would probably know better than me how to revert back to the previous version and give it a try.

I haven't got a clue. My problem was with the DVD install, I never even got THIS far with the internet install - it kept flaking out on the download/install of pluto-avwizard, and that's where progress with the internet install stopped.

Yeah, the internet install is pretty flaky too. I tried to do it several times with no success.

Nice, it's still not completely right, but is much closer. At least I can get my nvidia gui to correct for overscan. Thanks!

Purps,
I am using an nvidia 8400 gs so if your using an ati, I think we can probably rule out video cards as the culprit.

It also worked for me, thanks. It does not install all the packages like you said, but at least I can get to the desktop now.

Other things can be installed manually too, like terminal, systemsettiings, dolphin etc. After a little work I have a pretty functional desktop again.

systemsettings must be installed to disable the screensaver. Once I got the desktop back, the screensaver kept interrupting my movies. None of the xset commands would work. Fortunately I found this with synaptic.

I also have reformatted the system last night and installed this morning with the same problem.

CRTL-Alt-F1 or CRTL-ALT-F2
Log in, and type ksmserver <enter>
You will receive something like "not installed, enter sudo apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin"
Do it: sudo apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin.
It will be installed.
Also do a sudo apt-get install konsole dolphin systemsettings synaptic
After this, CTRL-ALT-F7 and under KDE you will be able to install whatever necessary with synaptic.
It worked for me.
Hope this helps.

EDIT: corrected the systemsetting to systemsettings

Your fix works for me as well but the systemsetting brought up an error so that didn't get installed. Anyone no the proper syntax / name for this file?

I have don't have the exact message but it couldn't find it. It found all the other files. The main question that needs to be asked is why this situation happened? The desktop worked fine for me before the LMCE installation.

repeat and report the error.
i will try to reproduce it here and give a feedback.
regarding why parts of the kde vanished, i really don't know. it happened to me too.
maybe one of the developers can answer this.

I did a 2nd installation and had the same results. After finishing with Sarah I tried the kde desktop and recieved the "Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation.". I followed your instructions but systemsetting causes an error: couldn't find package systemsetting. All the other files were installed. I flip back to the kde desktop and nothing has changed. I change back to console and reboot. The kde desktop works but not all the programs are there. Also my sound has stopped working in the desktop where it worked before the LMCE install.

Well after getting mythtv running....things don't seem to be going well. Mythtv works fine in kubuntu but not in lmce. Also I noticed that the kde desktop appears before lmce on startup. So it looks like I'll have to wait until this issue is cleared up before I spend anymore time on lmce.

on 0810 beta 1 mythtv was working fine. after new install to beta 2, mythtv i can not make it work like it should. another problem that bothers me is the lack of subtitle support. as reported in other posts, it worked on 0710. why does it not work with 0810? maybe i shall stop spending time until it's more mature...... i really like lmce, but withou subtitle support, it's getting hard.

ok, re-installed and kde does not work with ksmserver error, mythtv does not recognize the tuners, my nas device did get recognized but media is not showing up.

I'm basically looking at a blank media menu, nothing, zip.....

What can ik do, other than installing kde, since that takes over the whole computer to kde again.

I did two installs this past weekend and got the same result as rperre. I tried your solution and I installed kde. Has something been fixed or changed since you made you last post?

At this point the best way to get the KDE error resolved is to (per Possy on irc):

apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

After
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop run the post-install.sh from the new-installer...tar.gz, and it resets the startup links and such, to load LinuxMCE before KDE

Mine, all fresh and new, is booting into LinuxMCE now, and awaits my starting KDE as it should...

As tested last night, the SAME procedure can be run upon MD's:
Code: [Select]
apt-get install kubuntu-desktop && /path/to/post-install.sh

I just finished a new install as well and got the ksmserver error. I talked to possy on #linuxmce and found out that the dvd install I had was beta 2 and I needed the snapshot dvd install. You can find it here and select the latest version:

http://linuxmce.iptp.org/snapshots/ (http://linuxmce.iptp.org/snapshots/)

As soon as it downloads I will try it (the download is very slow 100 - 125KBs)

Hi macaroni,

does that mean installations from existing dvd's are not updated/upgraded, ie a net install is the only way to get a system that's  properly updateable/upgradeable ?.........I'm  confused.......not hard I know

Ian

You can do a dvd install from the link I posted (referred to as snapshot). Apparently the beta 2 dvd, which I think is shown for the installation, isn't updated. So that was where I got confused. I didn't know there were two dvd installations.

Can you provide your IP to troubleshoot the download speed? Logically ATT & Level(3) should have a good connection whilst you experience is slow

As soon as it downloads I will try it (the download is very slow 100 - 125KBs)

I rather not not post my ip address. Besides I have conferred with possy and it has been reported. My dsl is running well beside the up / download connection is working as expected. I have dd-wrt loaded on my router and I see 6Mbs download speed often.

macaroni,

vkangin provides the server space, hence his question. Maybe you can post a PM to him about your IP address, so he can verify the logs.
