Title: silly question
Post by: maverick0815 on September 30, 2009, 09:17:34 am
I just want to make sure what happens, so just don't bite my head off:
I recently added a new harddisk to my core and told it to use linuxmce filestructure. Now I need to reinstall the the whole system. When the new install finds this drive and asks me to use the linuxmce filestructure again, what happens to the existent content on that disk? Will it be wiped off, or does linuxmce recognize the structure and just put it back where it belongs?

Like I said, I just want to make sure....

If you reinstall to your first drive...then you are going to loose any data on that drive during the reinstall process. Your recently added 2nd drive though is just for data and does not get touched (ie formatted or repartitioned) by the fresh install on your first drive. After you first boot your fresh install on drive 1 and have finished the Setup wizard and have the PnP engine running then your 2nd drive should be detected... just choose the same options you chose last time (ie Pluto File structure etc etc etc) and all will be fine - the detection of the drive and the questions asked are only so that LinuxMCE knows how to handle the drive... no other operations are carried out on the drive at all.

Hope that puts your mind...and your head at rest too ;-)

All the best

Andrew

Thank you very much Andrew,

that does set my mind at ease. Now that will hopefully be my last obstacle...and I can do my final install now.
