Hi,
I'm currently building a new home in ocean county, NJ, and i'd like to wire it up for everything possible, so here's what i'm doing - can anyone guide me what else i should do.
I want linuxMCE to control the following:
1. sound system - so i'm running 18/4 stranded and a cat5e to a volume control in every room and 18/2 to each speaker
2. alarm system - need help here (what kind of wire to run and where) - i'd prefer to use motion sensors put in strategic location aroud the house.
3. video surveillance system - i'm running cat 5e to each location i might put a camera
4. climate control - need help here (again - what kind of wire)
5. phone/intercom system - running a cat 5 to anywhere i may put a phone
I'd appreciate any input i can get.
i got 5000 feet of cat 5e. so i'd prefer to use that if possible....

Something to think about: If you're doing a new build and want to build it up for the future, you may want to consider cat6 as your medium, though i understand using 5e if you've already made the purchase.

Remeber that LMCE works off the concept of having a media director in each room which would normally be responsible for controlling all devices in that room. With that in mind, you would generally not have any wall mounted volume controls, rather using an orbiter or remote control to interact with that room's media director. The media directors communicate with the core via ethernet, so you want to have cat5/6 to each room.
And there really should be no reason to need any cables other than cat5/6. Even if you decide later that you need to run a/v signals between rooms, there are adapter baluns available to run every signal out there on cat5.
Climate control, lighting, and alarm equipment is usually wireless, such as zwave. at most cat5 is needed, at least just power.
So youre on the right path with the cat5e everywhere. the only question you need to answer is how many to pull to each location (and its always more than you think) :)

Hi Joseph,
I have discussed many of these issues in a number of threads here in the Forum in the past. So re reading some of these threads may well assist you in formulating your preferred approach/strategy. Also do some searches of the Forum for other similar threads...there are many that would be of help to you i am sure.
Also after doing the above reading, or at anytime, I am happy to respond to any questions you might have about the approaches I have discussed here in the past.
