Title: Can I watch Web TV e.g 4Od, BBC IPlayer, ITV Player etc?
Post by: bearslumber on April 14, 2009, 07:51:27 pm

Hi,

This looks very interesting, and I wish to start a project up building a LinuxMCE system.

But, before I start can someone confirm that with LiveMCE I will be able to watch WebTV such as 4OD, BBC Iplayer, ITV Player and other web tv facilities from my Television?

Apologies if this is a very straight forward question, but nowhere seems to spell this out as a feature.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Hi there & welcome!,

Just a quick answer to your questions;

4OD - is currently Windows only (this may change later this year...)

ITV Player - is based on MS Silverlight...but Moonlight 1.01 should be compatible (this is the Linux compatible OSS runtime for Silverlight. We are working on getting this working now.

BBC iPlayer - iPlayer is working now in our Dianemo installations with Update-5 but requires an update to Firefox 3.03 and Flash 10 in LinuxMCE-0710. There are no updates for LinuxMCE-0710 and that version has been frozen as we move towards the first Beta's for LinuxMCE-0810 which will support iPlayer.

Hope the above helps you.

All the best

Andrew

Thank you very much Andrew,

Much appreciated.

Sounds like if I can play it over the web via linux and firefox then I can do it via LinuxMCE. I am running ubuntu Intrepid Ibex, and after reading your response watched Dr Who on the Iplayer. I could not get ITV to work with Moonlight. The sight does not seem to recognise moonlight and still asks me to download silverlight. Anyway thats a story for another forum, and I guess will work given time.

Iplayer is certainly enough for me to make a start.

Many thanks again, and will most likely be back when I start getting my hands dirty.

p/s the links to your websites report a problem so I was unable to browse. Went to the German site instead. I'm gaining interest so hopefully these pages will be up again soon.

Lucas,

Glad to be of help. Yes iPlayer works well with Firefox under Kubuntu 0810 and with updated packages 0710 does the same. Silverlight is still beinng worked on here but it should be workable soon.

Thanks for pointing out the problem with dianemo.co.uk - some site maintenance is under way so it should be back up in the morning.

All the best

Andrew
