Title: iPhone Orbiter Design

Hello,

the past couple of weeks/month I have been thinking about an iPhone/iPod Touch orbiter. One thing where I can't make up my mind is, should I go LinuxMCE style (i.e. just use the regular basic UI), or should I go Apple style, like the iOrbiter proof-of-concept.

Posde, will this mean we can use the iPhone as a mobile orbiter?  And when did I miss the boat on the iOrbiter POC?

it does not mean anything. I am just thinking about the iPhone and iPod Touch a lot these days, as my n810 died on me. And one of the thoughts surrounding these two products is, should one shoot for a iPhone compatible look, or for a LMCE compatible look.

The trunk contains my PoC of an iOrbiter (someplace ...)

Understood, I voted to the iPhone compatible look.  Hoping this turns into being able to use them as mobile orbiters as I would love to start using that functionality of the system beyond the web orbiter.

I am not sure, that the iPhone needs to have a mobile orbiter. One of the things about the iPhone is, it is always connected to the net. Why limit ourselfs to the mobile orbiter functionality, when we can have a full orbiter...

It was my understanding the a mobile orbiter actually has some functionality not available on the web orbiter.  Also, the web orbiter has an annoying refresh that must take place.  I'm not entirely sure how the symbian based mobile orbiters handle this, but for example, the house can't call and notify the web orbiter of a security breach or send notifications to the web orbiter unless I'm overlooking something (I hope so).  Those elements aside I agree a full orbiter is the way to go, and actually think a hybrid full orbiter that can receive mobile notifications is really the ultimate solution.

I have been using the web orbiter on my iPhone - or should I say not using it. I would much rather have as mobile orbiter app, that is stable and includes those features not available in the web orbiter. If it were $20 in the store - I would download it right now!

It is not a matter of regular web orbiter or mobile orbiter. The iOrbiter is a web app, but totally different from the web orbiter. The display resolution of the iPhone and/or iPod Touch is way to bad for a UI1 web orbiter.

Interestingly enough, we have only 15 people who decided to vote on the issue.

I guess the need for an iPhone/iTouch orbiter is not that big an issue as I thought. Oh well ...

Well we are very interested in it indeed...an iPhone & iPod Touch Orbiter I think would be a very popular way of interacting with LinuxMCE.

We'd be willing to kick-start some sponsored development of this if your interested ie maybe on a similar basis to Thom's current Gyration effort.

Would you be interested? :-)

I haven't voted because I don't have a preference for UI design.

Now if the vote was "Is it worth creating an iPhone Orbiter app?" I suspect you would get a much higher response  ;)

I do not even have an iPod Touch nor iPhone. And I do not want to put any kind of pressure on me, by committing to a time frame (and someones sponsoreship). Looking at my proof of concept, I am wondering, how much of the regular functionality should be on such an orbiter. i.e. it is fairly easy to complete media browsing, room selection and automation scenario selection. Getting into telecom and security is a different beast all together. One, where my current way of thinking wont work.

Out of interest...apart from making development easier... what stopping you with a screen size of 1024 x 600?... :-)

does not work on my fakebook. Even tried a studio display. Was detected perfectly, but no sync.

Hi Possy,

Great work, I just saw this thread now, I might be going blind? I took a quick look at the source and it looks promising I will try it out when I get my 0810 core running. I currently use my ipod as a remote for PLEX/Seven (XBMC for mac) every day and I can't imagine using LMCE without it.

The iOrbiter was built under 0710. I never tested it on the real device, but used midori for testing it.
