Title: 0810 alpha 2 no /usr/pluto/diskless
Post by: chrisbirkinshaw on April 11, 2009, 01:10:27 am
I have defined an MD and clicked rebuild but it seemed to be instant. I had a snoop around the system and saw /usr/pluto/diskless does not exist. No warning is given by /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_Setup.sh, yet nothing is created for that MD. I tried creating /usr/pluto/diskless and running the Diskless_Setup again but still nothing is created.

Has anyone seen this?

Chris

Yes, it looks like it worked, but then /usr/pluto/diskless is empty. It also seems odd that it was not created in the first place.

I want to try the install again, but do I need to wipe everything or can I run the scripts again?

Hi chrisbirkinshaw,

After you run the Diskless script boot the MD again.

If that doesn't work try the script again before re-installing.

Cheers.

I can confirm that this does not work on a fresh install of LMCE-0810-alpha2.

The device shows up as a media director in the web interface, however there is no data created in /usr/pluto/diskless and the reboot of the MD tries to re-run diskless_setup.

I had to create /usr/pluto/diskless as root and still no joy.

output from console when running Diskless_Setup.sh is as follows:

I also tried booting an MD and letting it auto create, rather than use the web interface, however I get a "unable to load config file" from the PXE boot.

Hi,

Just curious.  Did you get the "we announce ourselves to the router" message?
Title: Re: 0810 alpha 2 no /usr/pluto/diskless

Doesn't even PXE boot. PXE fails to get a config file. I have to dash out but can debug it over the weekend.

pigdog,

I get the "we announce ourselves to the router" message however it immediately tries to run the Diskless_Setup.sh and then fails regardless of how many times I've tried to rebuild the disk image.

Hi ProfFalken,

If I remember correctly I think one of my MD's did something like this.

Was an entry created in webadmin but mostly blank?

Post by: pigdog on April 16, 2009, 09:09:36 pm
Hi chrisbirkinshaw,

If it doesn't PXE boot check your BIOS settings.

If it tries to PXE boot you get a DHCP message with MAC addresses and stuff, then some messages.

Do you get at least that far?

Cheers.

PigDog,

Yup, I've just noticed that there's no information for this MD apart from the following:

Diskless boot
Architecture
Extra Parameters Override
Model
Last Update
Release
IP
MAC

Is it worth deleting the MD from the webadmin and retrying the addition process?

PF.
Title: Re: 0810 alpha 2 no /usr/pluto/diskless
Post by: tkmedia on April 16, 2009, 09:22:26 pm
Ok here's how it works currently. for me  at least.

If you boot a MD from a fresh install. It will not pxe boot, it fails looking for a config file iirc.
If you run /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_BuildDefaultImage.sh

It should now enable the pc's to boot.
You should see announce to router

Alot of MD's will fail while running the Diskless Setup ..... this is due to the lack of a 64bit diskless image.

After the diskless failure you will have an entry for the new MD in web admin.

Change the Arc to i386 select update, then press the rebuild image button.
Once finished the web admin will say so.

At this point the directory structure should exist for that MD.

Follow the 0810 MD instructions regarding the password and updating of drivers.

HTH

Tim

I deleted and rebooted the MD, it PXE boots to the point where it tries to run the Diskless_Setup.sh then it fails as expected.

Here's what the output from the webinterface shows after I've rebuilt the image:

Code: [Select]
sudo -u root /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_Setup.sh

sudo -u root /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_ExportsNFS.sh

 * Re-exporting directories for NFS kernel daemon...
   ...done.

It executed this incredibly quickly and does not provide any dir-structure under /usr/pluto/diskless

I'm also struggling to find anything in the logs of relevance.

Hi,

Just to verify...

This is after you added the architecture type as i386 in wedadmin and rebuilt via the webadmin rebuild button that's associated with the MD?
Title: Re: 0810 alpha 2 no /usr/pluto/diskless
Post by: ProfFalken on April 16, 2009, 09:47:06 pm
pigdog,

That's correct and I've tried it with a different MD device as well (never been seen by this system before) and get the same result.

Something I have noticed is that /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_Setup.sh calls /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_CreateFS.sh which relies on being able to unpack /usr/pluto/install/PlutoMD-$Moon_Architecture.tar.bz2 however the only file in /usr/pluto/install that is similar to this is PlutoMD_Debootstraped.tar.bz2.

Could this be the issue?  If it is, where can I get the i386 tar.bz2 file?
Title: Re: 0810 alpha 2 no /usr/pluto/diskless
Post by: ProfFalken on April 16, 2009, 09:52:20 pm
OK, I gave it a go and hard-coded the deboostrapped.tar.bz2 into the Diskless_CreateFS.sh and then re-ran the "rebuild image".

I get a much more productive output from the web interface, I'll post the results of the next PXE attempt.

OK, PXE was more promising, no announce to router by vmlinuz did not exist.

Have deleted both MDs and will retry creation.

Title: Re: 0810 alpha 2 no /usr/pluto/diskless
Post by: ProfFalken on April 16, 2009, 10:06:09 pm
Diskless setup now runs for a new MD, however it does not create the vmlinux image under /tftpboot/

Further investigation reveals that the kernel has not been installed into the /usr/pluto/diskless/#MD/boot dir.

Chrooting to this dir and trying to install a kernel shows that aptitude is not installed, apt-get is and it looks lik I need to install the kernel and kernel headers.

I'm guessing this is also done by the Diskless_CreateFS.sh script and whilst I've been looking through that script I've noticed that Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh has been commented out.

I'm going to look at this further and see if I can fix it.

I've uncommented the lines in Diskless_CreateFS.sh and executed it for MD #64 (the newest addition to my system) it is now setting up a complete linux system including downloading packages via APT so I think I may be on to a winner.

I'll keep you all updated.

FAIL on the attempt to fix this by hand, have updated /etc/apt/sources.list as documented in the wiki and am re-running the CreateTBZ.sh script.

Hi,

Myth failing...

sudo apt-get install pluto-mythtv-player

see if that passes... unless you've done that.

The sources.list change allowed the CreateTBZ.sh script to run without issue and I now have the i386.tar.bz2 file in the correct area.

I've just started a new MD PXE booting and so far the "Diskless_Setup.sh" has not failed (been going for a while now!)

If this works, I'll document what I've done and see if I can get it posted to the WIKI and fixed for the next version.

Success!

The Diskless_Setup.sh script now works on my DCERouter!

I'll post the amendments I had to make to this post and on my blog a bit later on today.

PF

*** Edit ***

The MDs are reporting that the AV wizard couldn't be started, so that needs investigation.  I've a feeling that the image my still require rebuilding but the base image is now created automatically.

Not sure why you're jumping through all hoops hard coding etc.

If you follow my post, it works perfectly.   Yes the first script "DisklessCreateDefaultimage should run at post-install time.

The 64bit image is not available in 0810 yet that is why it fails.

Somebody with an i386 detected system should have no issues.

So simply change the Arc in web admin and rebuild the image.

Once booted there are issues that need to be fixed.

I've edited a few things in the Diskless_Setup.sh and Diskless_CreateFS.sh scripts and it now automatically generates the i386 image and deploys it to new MDs without needing to click the rebuild button in the MD Web interface page.

I presume that if you are adopting 64-bit images, the 32-bit images will remain, or is the plan to phase out 32-bit support?

pigdog,

nope, it doesn't exist.

Strange, I do have this file with the latest alpha!

My problem is as follows...

When I run the CreateFS script it fails because this command does not return anything to the variable:

Code: [Select]
local DisklessImages=$(GetDeviceData "$Moon_DeviceID" "$DEVICEDATA_DisklessImages")

The top of the file states:

Code: [Select]
DEVICEDATA_DisklessImages=258
When I look at the device template I do not see a device data with id 258, though it is available to add from the dropdown.

Seems odd. What does this string normally contain? Does anyone else have it in their Generic PC as an MD template?

Chris

Hi chrisbirkinshaw,

Sorry I'm a little confused.  The last message I sent to you in this thread you could not PXE boot.

So it seems that you can PXE boot now.  Correct?

On the core from a terminal you ran sudo /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_BuildDefaultImage.sh - correct?

Then you did a physical reboot of the MD?

Then Rundiskless setup fails?

Does the device get created in webadmin?

Sorry, I just want to know where I am.

Cheers.

Please note that I cannot confirm that this works with a 64bit Core as I run dual-core 32Bit Processors in all my servers.

I have tested this on my system at home and also inside a VM but I do not guarantee anything!

Have fun,

Yes thanks, I made a stupid mistake with the PXE initial setup. The MD is created in the GUI but diskless setup does not work. I started looking into the CreateFS script and saw that it is not getting the dev data with id 258 from the database for the MD in question. It seems that the device template itself is missing this attribute entirely, and wondered if anyone can compare notes with me?

Thanks,

Chris

Could you download the original sh scripts, and provide a diff. That would ease the workload of the people working with the patches.

Have you successfully got an MD created on K810, Alpha2 latest install with your above mentioned files?

I am still not able to get one created.  I still don't even have a diskless directory under /usr/pluto/.

any suggestions?

I just updated to the latest alpha on a MD (http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/EVGA_nForce_e-7050_610i (http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/EVGA_nForce_e-7050_610i)) that used to require me to copy over the file as covered in the wiki (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Unrecognized_NIC (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Unrecognized_NIC).)

I am currently going through the AV Wizard having simply turned on the MD- no hacking, no busybox errors, nothing- install has been flawless.  This box has a nVidia video card (using a PCI-e one because I needed s-video out) and the core (M3A78-EM) has an ATI video card- incase someone was wondering about mixing video card manufacturers.

Also just added a WebDT 366- installation was smooth as it was in 710.  There maybe an issue in that I am confident that I selected the Family Room as the location and when it generated the scenario it generated for the master bedroom; as that this is the wrong forum for this, I will leave it at that and post again when I install the WebDTs if I experience the same.

I did a fresh install.
Booted my first MD (64bit AMD with integrated Nvidia 7050pv)
After a while the core MD asked for a Quick reload and the AV Wizard came up on the MD.
No drivers, no reboot, no xorg setup, pure fun :)
And a full regen of all orbiters

I then tried my Asus Pundit with a Nic that was usupported in 7.10 and a ATI integrated x1200 or something.
That one is also AMD 64bit.
After a while the core MD asked for a Quick reload and the AV Wizard came up on the MD.
No drivers, no reboot, no xorg setup, pure fun :)
And a full regen of all orbiters

GREAT WORK!

cirion,

your post made my morning :)

Thank you for the positive feedback.

Now we need to figure out, what happens with the installs, where it does not work.

Cirion, do you use UI2 and does the photoscreen saver work?

Yes, I use UI2 with overlay, and yes the photo screen saver works on the Core and all the MD's.
