Title: can't get web orbiter play any Media (audio, video)
Post by: olvisab on February 08, 2009, 02:51:15 pm
Hello everybody

As this is my first post, I want to thank you all the team for this great stuff!
I have two problems that I can not resolve by myself (I looked into wiki and this forum).

I can not see anything when I play a dvd (in the core) through a web orbiter (pc connected on the network).I select Manage drive and choose the only drive I had registred (the one used by the core)

I can see the web orbiter in Firefox, but it seems that no plugin or playback screen appears in order to play the stream send by the core.

I tried with the DVD install and CD install. When I tried from the core I used Firefox with the initial plugin of the install.

When I play a dvd from the HDD it doesn't work neither.

I don't know if it is a plug in pb or anything else.

Thank you for your help.

If you are trying to view the content of the DVD on the web browser, you have no luck.

The Web Orbiter is purely that - an orbiter to control a PC playing stuff.

An Orbiter itself does not display media, only a Media Director plays stuff (and some other audio output devices like a SqueezeBox)

Thank you for your answer

We should use the term "remote" and not orbiter for this device.
I agree It is more than  a remote but it avoid people to think it could run as a real orbiter (on screen).
Don't you think?

No, an Orbiter is one thing, a Media Director is another - you just need to get your definitions the right way around! We don't rename things just because you made a mistake :) It's an Orbiter because it is a "satelite" to the actual Media Director device. You have On Screen Orbiters, Mobile Orbiters, Web Orbiters, etc. They are not "remotes", you can use a remote to interface with an Orbiter, but it is different.

You can even go back to the original (and still intact) naming definition.

Each of the media director is called moon<device-id>

The core is pluto.

And the Orbiter is capable to travel from moon to moon. And control stuff on the relevant media director.

The onscreen orbiter on any of your media director can change its location, and control a different moon (room). Whenever you hit play media, the media will not play on the orbiter, but on the moon (room, media director), you have selected on the orbiter.

I use this analogy to get things sorted out in my little brain.

I don't want to rename thinks, of course but your explanation are not useless for the new user.

Thanks for taking time to answer

Nice, discussion, but why do pictures play on your orbiter and not on the screen of the media director ?
 ??? ;D

because the pictures mediatype does not have a media player of its own yet.

The feature was hastily implemented as a workaround in the media details page.

This is an assignment for a willing hacker. :)
