I have 3 MD's total, one on the core and 2 diskless MD's. I can watch and play any video file on any of the MD's, but if I choose the floorplan and then select 2 MD's and try to play to each of them simultaneously, only the one that I started playing the video on works! I did the following:
- Start watching a avi on MD
- Using an orbiter, go to the floorplan
- Choose "first floor"
- select each MD and then click the video in the list
It keeps playing on the first MD, but it won't play on others.
-
So does mine. It always has for me... don't know why, and never really got an answer to this one. Wish I could fix it! It actually thinks its playing, but there is no audio or video...
-
Wow, that's a big problem then! Has anyone else gotten this to work (aside from the demo video)? Please chime in if you have.
-
Yes others have, its something specific to us.

Hmmm... thats interesting. We have that working here but I guess somehow a patch to fix that was never posted by us. I thought we had done so... but I have to say I cant find any reference to that here myself... Ooops :-(
I will have someone look at whether we did a patch and it just did not get uploaded or whether we just never made the patch at all. I have to say I cant say either way right now.
Anyway I will find out and post back in this thread as soon as i figure it out.
All the best (& sorry!)

Andrew - thanks, does that mean to say that you recognise the issue, and CHT have resolved it, but you just aren't sure how? Or do you not even recognise the issue?

Hi Colin,
We (ie CHT) fixed that issue ages back and I had thought we had posted a patch or fix here or on the Wiki... at least that was my 'assumption'... but it appears we didn't (or at least I cant find it if we did!). But we do have that fixed so I will try to find out if we have a patch or set of instructions to fix it and get those up here asap.

We had that working at LinuxTAG last year, if I recall......

Cool, thanks guys! Btw, I can't tell but is it supposed to still use videolan to split the stream? Its not installed by default, and I read/heard that this was old info... so I'm assuming that the xine libraries can now do this on their own...

No 0710 uses xine for this.

that is weird, this feature has worked since the first day for me.

difference in install media/patches between DVD and CD install kits? install diff using "all-in-one" versus standalone Kubuntu first?

Hmmm... could be. We have only used the DVD builds and release for 710...so this is possible.

I used the CD's on top of Kubuntu 7.10. I couldn't use the DVD installer (I vaguely recall it not being able to partition the drive).
Ok, well how does this broadcast work exactly? Maybe I can figure out how to fix it then on my own. Googling finds someone that used PulseAudio with xine, is that it?
-
Nope, haven't used the CDs to install for about a year. Have re-installed using the DVD at least 20+ times since then.. mine is definitely a DVD install. (i386 0710RC2 single layer)
-
mine worked with both DVD and CD install, so that rules that out.
-
Ok, what logs would I look into to help troubleshoot this? How does xine send the media to other systems simultaneously? What command is sent to each MD when you do that?
-
You need to sit tight and wait for Andrew to get back to us.

Hi Guys
I have the same problem but it did work what I was wandering could it have some thing to do with the output Eg 1 MD is using HDMI and the other is using VGA not sure if I am on the right track or not but i am sure that mine was working fine till I changed it from VGA to HDMI
I am probably barking up the wrong tree ???

I would be very surprised, after all, xine isn't talking directly to the output, it draws into the video frame buffer (not even directly, through OpenGL I believe). The card/chipset is responsible for reading the image and outputing it to the correct output...
-
True
and i understand that part but as i said it was working but its not any more and its the only thing i can think of at the moment that i have changed besides the audio is also hdmi as well
I will do some testing when i get home i have 7 MD's i will see if any will work
-
sure it wasn't working under b4 or RC1? If Andrew feels that they submitted a fix ages ago, perhaps it was in one of those releases, but got lost in a subsequent one?
-
the system I have at home has been running 710 rc2 from day 1
The only other thing i am thinking is my core is i386 and the MD in the Home Theatre Room is running i386 and the rest are running AMD64 ?
-
I'm running i386 on everything (as far as I know). Dev's - $20 via paypal if you can get this to work or find that fix!
-
It's one thing to compensate developers, quite another to insult them by lowballing it. Pay us for our time, not for a feature.
Don't be a dick.

I agree with Tschak 100%... although I would put it differently being a 'polite' Brit ;-)
The Devs here do amazing amounts of work that no one really 'sees' or appreciates... I know you understand they are working on the system... but you probably dont realise literally the 1000's of man hours they put into this project... none of which is for payment.
Offer them help and assistance definitely... maybe setup a 'PayPal' fund that can gather small sums from many people. Offer them hardware is another good idea.

agreed! $20 is insulting, it could be no other way under the circumstances. "jump for the cookie"! I understand you were trying to help encourage and provide incentive, at the same time there are many priorities.. it doesn't read well (even though I understand your intent!)
-
Well, I don't know what made it not work for you guys, but it never stopped working for me. Ever. From the first post, I understand that you have two flooplands, one for each floor? I never tested that. Looks like no one did, since you can select MDs from the hidden floorplans as well, through the selected floorplan (or so the reports I get say). If you have a single flooplan, it should work fine:
1. Select the MDs you want the media on -> they get listed in a comma separated list
2. Select the stream you want to play in the selected MDs
3. See it happen
When you do this, there's a "Move Media" message sent out. That one has a list with the selected MDs, and it end up in Xine, which processes it in a "Play Media" command or something. I don't know precisely.
-
I didn't view it as $20 for 1000hrs of work, I thought it was already fixed so it was $20 for finding the prior fix that was already made. $20 to find an old email was easy money I thought.
I'll try using only one floorplan called "Overview" and see if that works. If it does, I'll send uplink the money :)

Uplink, its definitely not to do with the floorplan, I only have one and it still does this. At least a handful of others are reporting the exact same behaviour. I believe it is the same behaviour without any floorplan.
-
Strange then. Can you look at the DCERouter's log and see if the Move Media and associated messages show up properly?
-
I tried deleting all floorplans, and creating one called Overview, and placing the MD's on that. No dice.
Funny thing I noticed, when I use my tablet to tell it to send to multiple MD's, it sometimes thinks it is controlling the wrong MD, for example after I will say sent to kitchen, and it will say "living room" in the bottom right, yet it will then control the kitchen MD.
Here's a snippit of me trying to send to 2 MD's from the Tablet.

I have noticed on occasion that the room being controlled suddenly changes without me asking it to. It is following a specific action, and I have a feeling that it might, indeed, be trying to split the stream to multiple EAs... will check when I get a chance. Although I usually just override it and switch back immediately so I'm not sure if I would also experience the same issue of it controlling a different EA than the display indicates...

Hi,
please try to look and post DCERouter log when this happen. There is another problem, that could also be related - some users spotted that when you want to turn off MD, sometimes main hybrid is switched off instead of just MD. Maybe this is related to this problem. Convenient way would be to remember time when this happened and some certain command that caused it and then dig into DCERouter logs...
This way we can solve things...
Regards,
Bulek.

Sure, I can duplicate that problem now when I try to send media to multiple MD's with my tablet orbiter. What in particular do you need? just the DCErouter log? I'll do it tonight when I get home.
-
Something I noticed, I can send audio to other media directors and that works fine, however video does not. The audio is not in sync though.
-
The audio not syncing is a known feature(bug) there is nothing built in to the system to keep the different MD's sync'd
-
Hey, playing a DVD works fine! I couldn't duplicate the problem where it changed rooms on the tablet again, but I noticed that I can stream a DVD to multiple MD's just fine (it's in sync too).
I can't play an AVI file though it seems.
-
its not impossible for the DVD to be sync'd especially when just using 2, but from my experience its mainly luck. And once you have 4-5 MD's all using different hardware its rare at best.
-
We do not employ anything for sync at all. We merely tell the player devices a starting timecode for position. This is not corrected as time goes on. You are more likely to get closer in sync IF you have more than one item in the playlist, and trigger them, because there is an initial latency for initializing the player stream handle.
-Thom
-
I do notice that when I have 4 going they are all a little out of sync, the MD's are all the same though (Jetway JNC62K). That's fine, they are close enough, it's good to know that using a playlist will probably help too.
Any idea from my log post why it doesn't broadcast AVI files? I find it strange that DVD's and MP3's work fine, but avi does not.

Thom - would it not be better to use some kind of broadcast or multicast mode to provide the sync? I get the impression that this is how it used to be when videolan was used instead. I notice that xine itself has a "network" (-n) and broadcast mode, so I assume that the underlying xine libraries support this.
Is it possible, in the future, that each MD could have 2 DCE devices, one that is a xine broadcaster, and one the actual xine player (I guess based on the current xine wrapper code). Then the media plugin would send DCE commands to the broadcaster device with the media stream handle, it would grab that source and begin "broadcasting". Then media pluging would send another DCE command to the xine player device, telling it to connect to the stream being broadcast from the broadcaster device (in this case, it would be local on the same MD).
Then, if subsequent streams were needed, either bifurcating to another MD, or even simply moving the stream, the media plugin would just send another DCE command to the xine player device on the remote MD, telling it to connect to the broadcast stream of the broadcast device on the first MD. This would ensure that (music and video) media was always in sync no matter how many MDs were playing it (especially if a multicast stream, but that's obviously a feature for later!) Even move media could be implemented this way, after all, in most cases who cares which MD is actually transmitting the steam and which is playing it (bandwidth not withstanding!). And this way it would always pick up the steam exactly where it left off, without that little "jump" and without having to use the time code system.
Obviously, the time code system would still be needed for bookmarks, and follow-me, etc... Just a hypothetical thought, wondering whether you thought this might be a more elegant way of achieving the goal, and perhaps even more in keeping with the DCE philosophy? (helps with my understanding of how all this stuff hangs together)
-
Well, whatever we can come up with, cool. But I think the only way you can understand this better is to just dig in at this point.

Something I noticed when working on looping video playlists is that avi, mp4, etc. are a separate media type from DVD's. Video files are referred to as StoredVideo in the code whereas .dvd files are coded as DVD. i.e. Pluto_StoredVideo_Constant vs. Pluto_DVD_Constant.
My video (either files or .dvd's) both stream to multiple MD's fine, but I do notice that the .dvd files are much closer to being sync'd than the avi files. DVD files usually have less than a second difference in the sync and are quite often perfectly sync'd but avi/mpeg files are commonly a few seconds off. I have no idea why this is, but I think they are handled differently in the code per StoredVideo vs. DVD. (Possibly in the timecode stuff)
None of this actually provides a solution to your problem but maybe bringing it up will jog someone's memory or give you a different direction to approach it from.
-
hmm yes, DVDs do seem to work on mine.. first time I've seen it work correctly, so there must be something in it...
-
The other MD's all think they are playing the video, and I've noticed that sometimes when I try to bounce the video back to another MD or send it again, sometimes it will "work" in that only 1 MD is still showing video at a time, but it is now in a tiny window. I wonder if the command it is sending to the Nth MD is somehow different than the first one. Or sometimes the screen goes black as if it is going to play, then shows the background picture but it is frozen. Or if I was sending videos back and forth it shows the last frame of the prior video frozen.
Have there perhaps been updates to 0710 (I thought that was the purpose of disabling ubuntu's update service)? It hasn't updated anything that I am aware of.

Hi Colin,
My mistake... I was confusing another fix, where tracks do not start playing at the beginning when playing a playlist, with this problem. That fix has been committed to the svn and will be part of 810.
As far as Uplink & I can tell (uplink works for Dianemo) multi-room playback of ripped DVD's using the media floorplan is working fine. The only thing that I can think of is that trying this with avi files might be the problem (I have not tested that hypothesis though).
All the best

Haven't tried ripped DVDs, but as mentioned in this thread, normal DVDs are working fine for each of us that have this issue. It is media files that is the problem... not sure if it is limited just to avi files....

Right... just re-read the earlier parts of the thread. Looks like its just media files then...

So strange. I've never had these problems...like...ever....
And we didn't have them at Linuxtag either, we were bouncing streams all over the place, much to the jaw dropping amazement of the passing attendees. ;-)

We dont see it either Thom... but we only do it with audio files and ripped DVD's... and it works fine with those.

No, I realise this, otherwise it would have been mentioned more often.... that being said, if you read back through this thread, and several others you will see that numerous people are seeing exactly the same issue... works perfectly with DVDs (dunno about rips at this point) but never works at all with media files.... don't know what the common factor is, but it is definitely completely repeatable and experienced in the same way by multiple people.... ie not a one off...?

Can someone with a working system post their dcerouter log when they send avi files to multiple MD's please?
-
I just checked viewing .avi on multiple MD, and I get the same result. Only the original MD shows video/audio, the others just show a blank screen with the mouse pointer (bummer). It works fine with DVD and DVDrip.

I have the exact same problem mentioned above. DVD's either ripped or in the drive of core broadcast to all MD's fine. AVI files only play in the original MD with the rest showing a blank screen with mouse pointer in lower left corner. Interestingly enough I have an .mkv file which plays audio/video on the original MD, and audio is broadcast fine to the rest of the MDs, but no video. I'm running alpha 2.26. Has this been fixed and maybe I missed the solution? Thanks

Has anyone found a fix for this? If not, is there anyone that has this working that can post their log please?
