Title: Orbiter without the Windows logo
Post by: Ray_N on January 29, 2009, 11:56:33 pm
Hey guys and gals!
Any recommendations for a good oob orbiter like the Gyration remote but that doesn't have the @#!#$&* Windows logo?
I've looked around the wiki and forum but can't seem to find anything related to this subject.

Thanks a bunch,
Ray

Note: Orbiter = the remote control interface used to control LMCE, not a handheld remote as such. You can use such a remote to control the Orbiter, or a mouse, touch screen, etc. Essentially, it is the graphical menu system on a screen (UI1/2).

Fiire is your best option, however they are expensive and I believe they are only selling them in lots of 100 at the moment due to some shortage or other. Perhaps look for second hand.

Your aversion to Windows is laudable, however perhaps you should just treat it as the utility it is ... a means to an end, and remain aloof! Just get the Gyration, it'll be easier and cheaper.

Standard air mice are usually good, too. You should be able to map the 3 key buttons to spares on the mouse.

Well thanks for the clarification...I stand corrected.

I guess I'm going to have to try to open the Gyration up and remove the logo myself  ;)  ...and void the warranty BTW.

I hear what you're saying colin, and I do appreciate that (its just a means to an end), its just that I feel it would be kind of insulting that I'll get to show off my new LinuxMCE stuff to all my friends and there is the flipping Winblows logo on the apparatus from where they control everything. As if "Yeah, its all great but still Windows has power over Linux"...kind of annoying...but anyway I know that's sort of a paranoid behavior...  :o

BTW, Just got my USB-UIRT on the mail today... should be getting the rest of the parts next week... Woohoo! Here we go!

How much is the dt 366 being sold for?

$350. An insane bargain considering they were over $2000 new, just a couple of years ago.

I would definitely be interested in buying one in the near future.  How would I be able to get my hands on one?

technically the Nintendo Wii-mote is also an alternative to the Fiire or Gyro, right?

Yes, but those instructions inadvertently disable mobile orbiter support.

If that's true, should the wiki article be edited to include that?  I don't see such a reference.  (I trust you, but I wouldn't have guessed such a limitation from the wiki... the wiimote is pretty cheap relative to other options and I had strongly considered it!  It's also nonWindoze logo'd)

We need someone to do the relevant device template work to make it plug and play.

Come on guys, all the documentation to do it is available, any takers?
