It's a bit geeky, but I like it.  I think it's a good fit for UI1.  I'd suggest adding a bit more color though.

Getting Better! We just need to refine your choice of fonts, and add style entries for your skin for the fonts so that it matches even better.

I knew I recognised the font from my typography days, it's Swiss911.

Well worth the $24 or so. :)

I was able to find the font for free so that works out. The question I have, is the font file universal? Will ubuntu be able to use it? If not I can work around it... The file is a true type font file.
The other thing is I have not used the designer program as of yet. I have been doing all this manuly by replacing the current graphics by hand.
I didn't get a chance to watch more then the first video and I was wondering if the software had to be loaded on my core in order for me to use it?
I do a lot of this on my down time at work.

The font file is a standard truetype font file. Which one are you going to use? You really should shell out just a bit for the Swiss911 (at least, I will, when I use your skin) ;-)

The truetype font MUST be in the /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/ as Orbiter is hard-coded currently to look here, and you must copy it to every single orbiter. This means not only the core, but each media director, and any non-OSD orbiter display. Since the Proxy Orbiter and Bluetooth orbiter use the server, it will use the fonts on the core.

and no, Designer is a windows .NET program (it DOES run on Mono, almost.. some bits need to be fixed.). It runs on a workstation on the same network as the core, and you point an ODBC connection to your server using MyODBC. All my instructions on installing HADesigner are on the wiki in "Installing HADesigner".

On my windows orbiter... Where do I put the file.. Do I need to copy it locally to the system somewhere?
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: tschak909 on January 01, 2009, 10:24:02 pm
For your windows system, the font needs to be copied into the system like any other font. Use the control panel > fonts to do this.

Ok so I have the font now installed on my Windows orbiter and and copied to the /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts directory. Without using HADesigner how do I tell the orbiter to reference the new font?
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1

Take a look at the Style Table.

These are styles that are used by various designobjs in Designer, and what Orbiter uses to paint everything.

These styles have variations.

Look at the StyleVariation.

See the references to FK_Style? Those reference back to the styles in the Style table.

See FK_Skin? If a number is here, then this style variation is for this given skin. If it is NULL, then it is a fall back for all skins.

So what YOU need to do, is to start adding rows for the individual styles, for your skin. You'll probably add one for each style, except where FK_Skin already has a number. we have some styles specific to the Mobile Basic skin, so you won't need to add those.

If you look in each row, a font is specified.

A quick note about colors:

You'll see references to foreground and background colors, with weird numbers. These are the decimal form of web colors, so take a paint program like GIMP, get the hex number there, put it into a calculator as hex, and flip it to decimal, use that number.

-Thom

p.s. Another note, once you make these style changes, everywhere you use this skin must have this font, or you will not see text.

Don't suppose there's even a chance of getting the text to fit within the boxes on this skin is there? Really annoying in the Basic skin :)
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: tschak909 on January 03, 2009, 10:10:43 pm
Yes, but it will literally take making new designobjs with X/Y/W/H set appropriately.

When making new skins with replacement designobjs, a new top level category the same name as the skin is made, "LCARS" and the replacement designobjs are placed there.

So I finally went through the wiki on how to install HADesigner. I downlaoded everything I needed and I followed the steps on the wiki... but I am getting the following message when I go to launch HADesigner:

Code: [Select]
ERROR [HY000] [MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]Access Denied for user 'myusername'@192.168.80.254' (Using password: Yes)
My other problem is when I went to create my system DSN I had a large list of options to choose from. I did end up choosing MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver.  I assume that is the correct option.

Any advice?
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: tschak909 on January 04, 2009, 07:36:56 am
correct driver.

However you didn't pay attention.

you need to do the following on a mysql console:

Code: [Select]
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON pluto_main.* TO myusername@192.168.80.254 IDENTIFIED BY 'password';

be sure to specify that password for the system DSN in windows.

my bad....
do I need to do that in my MySQL or just in terminal. I suspect within My SQL.
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: Zaerc on January 04, 2009, 05:05:02 pm
In mysql, but you can do it from the command line as follows:
Code: [Select]
mysql -u root -e "GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON pluto_main.* TO 'myusername'@'192.168.80.254' IDENTIFIED BY 'password';"You may have to adjust mysername, 192.168.80.254 and/or password to suit your needs.

So I went back and watched the Screen casts for HA Designer. Note that I did not watch everything but most.
I did not see from the screen casts I viewed where to manipulate font type. How do I change the actual font after I have downloaded and placed the font in the appropriate folders on the core and MD's?
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: tschak909 on January 05, 2009, 05:38:38 pm
The font panel is broken in Designer, and must be manipulated manually in mysql.

The font information is stored in the Style and StyleVariation tables.

Take a look at how they connect together, and if you need more explanation, reply back and I'll walk you through it.

Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: skeptic on January 05, 2009, 05:47:15 pm
Just to jump in with a question here.  If a non-standard font is used for this UI then rolled out, will regular users such as myself that don't manually install this font end up seeing nothing at all or some best guess font replacement?
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: tschak909 on January 05, 2009, 05:48:12 pm
nothing will be seen at all. Depending on the font, we will probably package the font as part of the skin package, providing the license allows for this.

I am most likely going to need you to walk me through this if you don't mind.
I am very new to manipulating anything in a database and frankly I don't even know where to start.

Also, I logged into my web orbiter this morning and noticed that my text is all big and wonkey... It wasn't like that before, Could there have been something I did in HA Designer to cause this? I don't recall saving anything.

Well, I'm not at my console, so I am doing this off the top of my head:

First, do you want to do this via the mysql console? or do you want to install the MySQL query browser (on mysql.com's download section)? and do it there?

Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: fearingsept on January 05, 2009, 06:01:18 pm
Which is easier?
I am inclined to say browser.
I am not at home anyway so if another time is better then I can wait.
I am just logging in remotely from work and making changes to files via ftp.
Thats how I have done all the designing thus far.... kinda slow but it seems to work out pretty well.
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: tschak909 on January 05, 2009, 06:16:32 pm
either way, it doesn't matter.

It is important that you look at the tables I am referring to, so you can see the information inside them.

I think before I go messing around with anything there should a quick definition of terms. That way I don't get mixed up.
First... MySQL Console, would this be a computer in which MySQL Database is stored or is this any computer on the same network as the MySQL database?

I know this might seem very basic and redundant, but I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

What are Style and StyleVariation tables? I assume it is a set of data laid out in a table that gives reference to how the GUI should act or look.

How do I locate them using my MySQL console?

Keep in mind that I know very little to nothing about database manipulation so I think the best approach is to assume I know nothing and try to be very basic.

Thank you very much for helping me with this. I know this is most likely not convenient for you and I will do my best to grasp everything the best I can so I can be more help to others in the future.

Yes I have....
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: tschak909 on January 07, 2009, 03:32:34 am
Okay.

Open MySQL Query Browser, and put in the username and password you specified in the GRANT command.

Be sure the host name is 192.168.80.1 (the address of your core)

and that the database you are connecting to, is pluto_main.

Provided that you log in, you'll see a list of all the database tables within the database. You are now directly talking to the database... you can then double click on a table, and press the execute button (it will have placed a SELECT query in the SQL box above) to look at its contents.

The tables we are interested in, are Style and StyleVariation, look at Style first.

OK... looking at style right now.
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: tschak909 on January 07, 2009, 03:56:17 am
Okay, now.

at the same time, open Designer, open DesignObj 1255 (the main screen)...

Select the Normal Horizontal variation.

select the children tab, and select and open the arrLights child designobj.

Inside that designobj, you'll see another child, which is the actual button to be used. Select and open it.

Now with this button open, and still at the child tab, select the text Array Desc (it shows as <%=6:0%> in the canvas.

You'll see the text properties change. Do you see the alignment, and below it the text style?

Look at the Style table in MySQL Query Browser, and you'll see a matching entry for it.

-Thom
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: fearingsept on January 07, 2009, 05:12:17 am
Just to make sure.. by open you mean load correct?
I load the arrlightsmain from the child tab of of the 1255 screen.
Then I select the child of arrlightsmain and load that correct?

So this is where I loose you...
I don't see the text properties.. can you be more specific as to where I should be looking for these properties?
------update-------
I may have figured it out. you are speaking of the 316 Array Description right?
Title: Re: Star Trek Themed UI1
Post by: tschak909 on January 07, 2009, 05:33:14 am
Yes, look over in that area, and you will see the text properties light up, when you select it.

I'm trying to show you the relationship of the table and the fields you _can_ see in Designer.

If you look in StyleVariation, you'll then see the actual font, color, and size entries for BOTH a given skin (FK_Skin), and UI (FK_UI) variation.

Add a new row,

on this new row, make it look like the old rows, except set FK_Skin to the Skin # of your star trek skin in the Skin table.

Do this for all the styles you want to change, be sure to change the font name appropriately.

Ok... I will go back after I am done and make it right.
I may have to review your screen cast about that again.

Question about font styles such as bold... I notice if I load bold into the browser there are 1's and 0's. If I do not want bold fonts can I change the 1's to 0's?

some ideas you might like in your theme:

1) Start replacing some of the stock icons. For example, the house icon on the first security button could be replaced with an icon of the Enterprise, the At Home, Away, Sleeping icons replaced with a teleporter icon in various stages, and texts changed to "Teleported", "Hypersleep", etc...

2) the now-showing media button (first button).. It would be cool if you make it animated to have a little screen with white noise (showing that no media is tuned).. It would only take a few animation frames, and if I remember correctly i saw some animate checkboxes in Designer (though I've never tried them yet myself)

3) (Assuming that you have success with animated designobjs)..  On your main screen, in the blank space in the upper right hand corner you can have an animated image of text scrolling in a text terminal (green text on black background?) to give it an ultra high-tech look

just some ideas to try to have some fun with.  Anyways, congrats once again, its looking great

Wow, verrah nice!

Was there a slightly wider variation of this font?

also, for buttons like the ones at the top.. you may want to make a new designObj for those lighting buttons, and put that into a new button array. This will allow you to reposition the text so that it fits comfortably.

Thanks for your suggestions. I still have quite a bit of tweaking to do before I think the skin will be done. One of the things is getting those lighting buttons worked out. I also need to finish making screens and icons. I will most likely ask for help on a few more things before I am finished.  ;)

Although I'm not really into custom screens or anything (I'm more into fuction than form).  I have to say, your work on this is VERY impressive.  I find myself eager to see the finished product and I'm actually starting to toy with the idea of trying some of my own modifications on the default skin (Which will undoubtedly result in the complete destruction of my installation yet again.  LOL)

Keep up the good work it is appreciated by the community

WTF???????

I logged in to my web orbiter this morning... most of my screens look fine except the new media remote screens....
They have all reverted back to the original. I have replaced the original .png files with my new files. This was working this whole week.

has it been regenerated since your changes? Maybe try manually doing a full regen on the web orbiter

I have already and there is no change.

Suddenly started showing up again... that was weird. I did not change files or anything it just flaked out and went back to the original screens and then for no reason it changed back to the new ones I created. I had done multiple full regen's this morning to see if it would change. Guess it was just being flakey.

Haven't done much lately due to a heavy work load. My next goal will be to finish the MD Remote screen and make them look similar to the orbiter remote for pvr and media. It's getting there... Just not as fast. I still need to go back and rename the directory and make the update in the database. That shouldn't be to hard I don't think.

One of my MD's died... I tend to build everything out of parts I have scavenged and repaired from broken computers. I had a power supply blow out and I am pretty sure it damaged the motherboard... so I had to come up with a MD out of other parts I had... That took some time away from my work on this.

It is pretty cool though to go in my living room and turn on my new TV and see the LCARS menu.

I did some work today. I will be testing this evening to make sure the screens align correctly. I am pretty close to at least getting a version ready for UI 1 that would be suitable for the beta. I will hopefully be done by the end of the week.

Just an update...
I got a great deal more done yesterday then I thought I would so the good news is that I think I should be able to finish by the end of this week. The hardest part for me is that I cannot use HA designer from work so I do most of my designing by manually replacing graphics with my LCARS graphics. I often have to hunt for the correct version of the graphic I am replacing. The good thing is that once I do it and figure out what graphics go to whichever names it should be much easier in the near future for me to develop other skins much quicker. I have a few different Ideas for skins. Its a shame that you cannot have a different skin depending on which user logs in. At least,... I don't think you can...

I will post some new screen shots soon.

So toward the end of my week I got very busy at work. I managed to get a great deal done but I am still lacking in a few screens. I need to do the security screens and some of the phone screens. The Majority is complete. Would you like to take what I have so far or would you rather me continue working and give you the finished product? I would like to say it will be finally done this week but my work tends to come in waves so sometimes I have a lot of time to work on the skin and other times I don't. This week may be pretty busy.

Fantastic, a few notes:

(1) let's try to get the font size a little bigger.
(2) the default data grid color/styles can be changed.
(3) love the details page, let's try to change the color of the data grid cells, it seems a little open.
(4) background color on the advanced options page... eh... NO. i'd rather it be black, but try to experiment a bit more with it.

I'm in LCARS love.  Did you use http://www.lcarsdeveloper.com/ (http://www.lcarsdeveloper.com/) for the color choices and images?  It also has a font for free, too.

I'd also like a copy of this whenever you feel ready to shoot this out to beta.  I'm still in the middle of watching all the screencasts, but I'd love to help.  It would get my feet wet with HAD and add a huge improvement to the family acceptance level in my household.  The wife might even let me spend the $300 for a new MD in the bedroom if she could go to sleep on the bridge  :-*

My only suggestions have already been said: change the default background of the media selector, and enlarge the font a bit.

Keep up the good work!

Any help whatsoever is appreciated. Willing to share my files for the greater good of awesome LCARSness.

I'll also take the file to try to help out.  PM me where to get the file.  I can host it on my site if need-be.

Also, on the way of websites, check out http://www.lcars.org.uk/ (http://www.lcars.org.uk/), which has "working" (flash) versions of every LCARS shows in every show.  I never realized, but every show has a slightly different color scheme.  They also have a bunch of animations for things like planets rotating, DNA sequencing, and trajectory plots from as shown on various episodes.  I don't see where you could download anything, but I'm sure you could email the creators and see what's up.

Thanks to Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCARS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCARS)!!

Share the day,

Given the dark nature of LCARS, a translucent background will need to be used...

the problem is, this would then make anyone using masked, see black, and only black.

So this will need some _SERIOUS_ experimentation across masked/alpha.

Yeah, well here are some things that seem to rule software:

The devil is in the details

Haha, I like that one. I am going to use that one from now on. Surprisingly I hadn't hear it. I was actually referring to a loose (and somewhat incorrect) interpretation of the  Pareto principle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle) that was referenced in some of my software development courses.

So, I know it has been a while since I have done anything with LCARS but I just want everyone to know that I have not forgotten as of yet. I am currently using the skin on my system and do plan on finishing it. Thankfully I just found another job so I should have some more structure now and will be able to get to it. I have had a lot of time to use the skin in the current state which has given me some ideas for improvements. So.. Though I still cannot promise a finish date, know that I have not forgotten and I still plan on getting it done. Also... I did read somewhere in here that someone else was or might be building or redesigning something based on this skin, If so, can someone let me know so that way we might be able to work together and get it done faster rather then against each other.

Still making progress, I have been pushing to get both UI 1 and UI 2 skins done over the last week or so. I did a little redesigning on UI 1. Looks a little sleeker on the main page now. Not completely happy with the color scheme yet but I am getting close. UI 2 has been much easier then I thought. I will be making a whole set of pictures to load as well that are all LCARS related Deck screens of the enterprise. This way you could disable flicker pics and import these so you can have only LCARS related images loading for the screen saver pics.

I would like some input as to what kinds of screens you would like to see or if you would like to see any other screen shots of galaxies or ships here. My first thought is to show different LCARS scan screens and decks and so on without any other external images as to give more of an LCARS only feel.

Any feedback would be good.

Purps,

Good job we're not all the same ;)

Personally, I'm after the UI1 version, not sure I want it on my MDs, but on the MO.... :D

Yeah, I know.. I am really bad at that I admit.
Mostly I have not had time to go back in and deal with the mysql edits. My Windows XP box crash a while back and I have not gone in and reinstalled HA Designer and everything that goes with it. I still have a screen or two that I have found in the UI1 that need to be finished.
The skin is still set up as my basic skin, I did not create a new design job for it so if anyone wants it on their system they will need to make a backup for their basic skin if they wish to keep it.
For any who want this skin as is for now I will host it on my share site when I get home from work today. I will post a link when it is up.
If anyone has any extra time and wishes to convert it to a new design job or anything that would be cool since my system isn't really up to par that moment. If not then that’s cool too.

Sorry Thom for not communicating and getting everything done as quickly as I was expecting. Oh.. And for not creating a new design job....

For those who want the LCARS Skin... you can find it here.

http://www.4shared.com/file/142252486/d9d9ca91/LCARS.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/142252486/d9d9ca91/LCARS.html)

Backup your basic folder.
Unzip the lcars zip file.
Rename the lcars folder to Basic and replace your old basic folder.

This may not be the preferred way to install this but it is the only way I know how.

I tried to set it up but didn't get it working. Then started back at the university so no time. I'll have a little time to play with it in the next few weeks. Any new notes on getting it running or just read this thread?

Once you replace your basic skin folder you need to do a full regen from the admin site. I forgot to mention that. so to recap... *not the official or correct way to install but it works*

1. Back up your basic folder
2. Rename the LCARS folder to basic
3. Replace your old basic folder with the new basic folder you created
4. Log in to the admin site and select "Wizard/Devices/Orbiters"
5. Click on full regen for all orbiters.

So, I know you are all tired of this by now... but I got tired of looking at a black lcars so I started to make another version of this skin.

First, I want to start out by apologizing to Thom. He works really really hard on LMCE and always takes the time to reply to my posts when I have issues. I apologize for not getting this skin officially in the beta and for my lack of communication. I would really like to submit this skin for the future.
Here is finally a demonstration of the UI1. It is really close to being finished now.

With Fearingsept's help I'll submit the theme alongside mine. Then both will be available as a choosable option.
