Title: LinuxMCE and Dreambox
Post by: phanosp on December 01, 2008, 09:07:45 pm
Hi all,

I am not sure if what I am going to ask has been answered or not. What I want to do is to install LinuxMCE and let it control my dreambox PVR600. I want to be able to use my dreambox and watch my favorite shows on any tv in my house using LinuxMCE. Does the LinuxMCE has this capability?

Thanks in advance,

phanosp

The Dreambox PVR600 has the ability to be controlled over the network and to stream TV.
But LinuxMCE has no support for Dreambox.

If you can find a Neutrino image for the PVR600, then it is possible to add it to Mythtv and use it as if it  was an internal TV adapter. I'm not sure how it works or if it supports the PVR600, but if you know how to flash your Dreambox it's worth a try...

The best option for now, would be to use the Dreambox with one of supported PVR cards to capture the stream, and use a USBUIRT to control it. With that you can watch your Dreambox from any MD in the house and control it. Since you only have one Dreambox, all MD's can watch the same channel but not different channels.

Hi cirion and PlatypusPedersen and thanks for the reply. I will look into everything you have said. I have only one question though. What do you mean by the following:

"The best option for now, would be to use the Dreambox with one of supported PVR cards to capture the stream, and use a USBUIRT to control it. With that you can watch your Dreambox from any MD in the house and control it. Since you only have one Dreambox, all MD's can watch the same channel but not different channels."

What do you mean to use the Dreambox with one of the supported cards? Do you mean to always set up my dreambox to capture what it shows on the screen and then somehow stream that to any MD in the house? Also how I am going to change channels on the dreambox from another room?

Thanks,

phanosp

Hi there,

What they mean is add a video capture card (eg Hauppauge pvr150/pvr250/pvr350 etc) to one of your MD's or your Core. Then use this card to capture the composite or S-Video output of the dreambox while using a USB-UIRT IR transceiver to send IR commands to the Dreambox's IR port to control it. With this config you can use MythTV (or soon VDR) to control and stream the output of your Dreambox and watch that on multiple MD's simultaneously. The main limitations being a slight degradation in picture quality due to the video capture process and that all MD's have to watch whatever the Dreambox is outputting... but that could be a Live picture or a recording of course.

All the best

Hi,

it seems that there is not a neutrino image for dreambox PVR 600. So I guess if I want to manage my dreambox I have to go with the USB-UIRT IR solution. Does anybody knows how much configuration will it needed in order to work properly with this solution? Is it just plug an play?

Thanks,

phanosp

Hmmm... well no it will not be 'plug n play' but on the other hand other than the part where you need to control the DreamBox's IR (ie blast IR to its IR port) the rest is the same as any other external video source based setup. Search the Wiki for articles on this side of the system.

All the best

All,

please excuse if this is a duplicate question:

Is there a way to use and/or distribute the stream coming out of a DB7020 ?

I managed to control the db with MCE but the quality I get when I take the signal back in with a video in card is quite poor (especially when upscaled to 1080p) du to the double conversion of the signal.

Thanks

There is a template to control Dreambox via TCP/IP. It uses a Ruby. But as I see it's just a stub and it doesn't work. But possible it can be expanded by people who want to use Dreambox as satellite receiver inside LinuxMCE. Also as I know even DM500 can be controlled via TCP/IP and not only via IR.
