Title: Music albums with multiple artists are not placed in same album
Post by: Afkpuz on July 17, 2008, 10:42:49 pm
I have several ripped cds that have multiple artists on them.  They are not burned cds, but classical cds with different artists on each album.  My problem is that each artist is seperated out in the audio section.  So I will have several entries for each album and some of those only have one song inside them.  Is there a way to fix this?  Will I have to go in a strike out the artist name in each song so that each album matches?  I'd be willing to do that, but wondered if there was an easer way.  Thanks

Sounds like you need to use the web admin to edit your attributes.

If you have a Performer attribute of "Nickelback" assigned to a file, and have a performer attribute of "Nikelback" (noticed how it is spelled differently) assigned to another file, then LMCE thinks that there are 2 different performers.

What I would do first, is go to Files&Media->Media Browser first, and filter all performers. Look through the list to see if there are any mis-spelled duplicates. If there is a duplicate, click on it to edit the attribute name, and change it to match the correct performer. When click finish, you will get a message that there is already an attribute with that name - and will give you the option to merge the two together.

Also, for advanced attribute editing, I recommend using the Files&Media->Media Files Sync page. However, don't run Media Files Sync from this page.. Just use it to go through your media, an drill down to its attributes. Then you can Add/Edit/Delete attributes on a per media file basis...

jon - don't forget this was a bug in an earlier beta I think, can't remember which. But for quite sometime this was the norm for all albums with multiple artists. One instance of the album tile per track beneath it. It turned out to be related to how the SQL query was grouping. Can't remember the explanation, but it was fixed. I logged a Mantis on it and I think some others did too.

When it was first fixed, it was a bit strange because it would "unzip" again if you editted attributes, and then after some time or a reboot it seemed to sort itself out again and zip itself back up again...if that makes sense. Don't know if it still does this as it has been some time since I tested. But perhaps this is related as it is clearly the exact same symptom....

Hmm.. interesting. I've never really noticed myself, I'll have to give it a try on my system when I get home.

I have fixed repeating albums as lited above though on several occasions

We have fixed this long standing issue with multiple artists CD's and the fix will appear in an update.

All the best

Andrew,
I just came across the same "unzipped" album quirk that Afkpuz described.  I'm using 0710RC1.  I assume from your post that this quirk still exists in 0710RC2 and will be fixed in a future version/update.  If so, is there any way to take advantage of the update before the next major release?

Regards,
Alex

Alex,

I doubt that an update will be released now that 810 is close at hand. I will check that this fix has been uploaded to the charonmedia svn though so that you could apply it yourself.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the reply.  I didn't know that the next major release is imminent.  Hopefully the fix will make it into that release.

Cheers,

Alex

Well I was not suggesting that there will be an imminent LinuxMCE release but there will be a release of Ubuntu 8.10 on the 30th Oct and then at some point after that there will be a LinuxMCE 8.10 release (work is underway on preparing for this now). However I certainly would not expect a LinuxMCE release to happen immediately as there will be much work to fo to get to that stage ;-)

Hope this helps.

Andrew,

as I am only a starter on SVN could you help me where to find more info on how to patch my system so I get rid of the enormous album list. I do not want to wreck my current setup :-) but I would like to be able to play an album with a single click.

Many Thanks

Han

Han,

The fix in question is in the svn but only for 810 as far as I know. I would suggest waiting for 810 to go at least Beta before trying it...

Before the fix is in you could do one of the following in the Web admin 'media files sync' page:

1.  find the album and '[ Edit attributes for all files in directory ]'.  scroll down to 'Add attribute' set it to album, check the box 'Replace existing attributes of this type?'.  then retype the album name and then press the 'Add' button.  now they will all show up as one album

2.  find the album and select the first song.  on the song page press 'edit' that is associated with the 'album' attribute.  on the 'Attribute' page just press the 'update' button.  the system will tell you that there is another Attribute with the same name, would you like to merge them.  Answer Yes.  the attributes will be merged.  I am not sure here if you can just keep pressing update or you have to do it for every file in the album but try it.

1 is the quickest
