I've seen that reported few times, and because it's not an issue I post this sticky topic:
After rebooting the computer the AV wizard starts. If you don't have VGA connector (if you use DVI (or HDMI), S-video, composite, or component) you get a "Black screen". Please read the whole page (if new linuxmce user) and specially Section II.
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard_running_steps
Section II
Another method to choose the resolutions and the connector is by pressing some keyboard keys. By default, the AV Wizard has the resolution 640x480 on VGA. To choose the connector you have to press the keys from 1 to 5 (1=DVI, 2=VGA, 3=Component, 4=Composite, 5=S-Video). To choose a resolution you have to press the keys from 6 to 0 (6=640x480, 7=1024x768, 8=720p, 9=1080i, 0=1080p). For choosing the resolution and connector you have to be in the initial screen of AV Wizard.

Hello,
I'm very new in all this linux stuff, I've seen the linuxmce demo video and was amazed by all the features.
So I went into my computer store and bought some stuff:
It's an Intel DualCore 2GHz with an Nvidia MSI 8600 graphic card.
The Installation by dvd was perfect until the reboot. The screen went blank and that was it. So I check here and wrote that it could be the screen resolution by DVI or Svideo. But I connected my monitor via VGA, so that's tnot the problem.
Is there any way to get this going? Like CD Installation or anything?
Eager to hear some tipps.
Thx
Philipp

I get a black screen on reboot directly after the grub-message. Changing the output by pressing 1-5 makes my pc just beep... I tried with composite and svga.
I use 7.10 beta 4 and have a Asus M2a-VM HDMI-Board.
Thanks

I still dont get the splashscreen and i cant see the virtual COnsoles using Strg+F?.

Not seeing the Splash screen and long boot up times is an issue with Kubuntu 7.10 for some people. If anyone is experiencing long boot up times and missing the splash screen, see this post:

Having resolved my previous issues i got linux MCE to install. However, upon reboot I get exactly the same problem. I am using a VGA cable so I should be ok to see the AV set-up. I have tried the suggestions here but nothing works. Can anyone suggest something else to get it working?
-
Dan,
I'm glad this is not an issue for you, but you may not be able to say for sure that it is not an issue for everyone experiencing this problem, unless you fancy travelling round the world checking our installations.
I have had a variety of difficulties with output from my FiireStations to my plasma and my LCD, many of which could be characterised as "black screen after installation is finished". I am well aware of the options to change port and resolution using the number keys. In my case this did not help. Nor did trying different output ports (VGA, S-Video, as well as DVI/HDMI, which is my preference). So far, no definitive solution has been found.
I'd suggest this may not be an issue - try the number keys might be a more appropriate generalisation.
-
Dan - what do you think about a possible enhancement to the keyboard shortcuts in the AVWizard that allow you to toggle between video chipsets? Perhaps just hit the space bar... maybe use lspci to identify them, then update the PCIBus setting in xorg.conf each time you hit the space bar...
I put a new video card in my machine, but my BIOS is one of those ones that only allows you to change which chipset is initialised first, not actually disable the onboard. So when it starts up it selects the onboard chipset still and I get a black screen. I knew the reason, and went into the recovery mode from GRUB, then manually edited my xorg.conf file and restarted, but many wouldn't know this ... and I guess it would be nice to add that extra bit to the wizard just to make it a bit easier.
Better yet, what tells the BIOS and linux loader to use the right video card (as video output is fine until X tries to start for the wizard) - could the wizard simply use that setting as the default xorg.conf - I'm assuming either an attached monitor is detected or all outputs are used simultaneously, but for some reason the initial xorg.conf file generated chooses the onboard chipset (why doesn't it pick the "first initialised" set in BIOS?

Hi,
I too am using VGA as my connection and can't see the AV wizard. Hahaha, well I am blind so I can't see it anyway, but it doesn't come up as far as I could tell with my limited vision and sighted friends say it doesn't. Kubuntu worked fine. Everything was displayed. I installed from CD.
Now it boots, shows the Kubuntu splash screen and some code and then drops the signal to my monitor and beeps.
Thanks,
-
Ok if your keys dont work whenever you get that blank screen, you might want to try this with a wired keyboard (just as a precaution). Keep in mind you dont want to hold down any keys:
Power on the computer
Kbuntu starts to load then you hear the first beeps (that to me sounds like an old cell phone ringtone)
it then finishes loading and that is where you get the blank screen, and you then get a second set of beeps
When you get the blank screen after this second set of beeps, hit enter
First we need to select what video type we want to do this you will need to press the down arrow key a certain number of times (depending on type):
For VGA - press nothing
For DVI/HDMI - press the down arrow key once
For Component - press the down arrow key twice
For Composite - press the down arrow key three times
For S-video - press the down arrow key four times
After youve pressed the down arrow key X amount of times you need to press the RIGHT ARROW KEY to move on and select your resolution:
If you selected VGA
640x480 (4:3) - press nothing
480p (16:9) - press the same key once
800x600 (4:3) - press it two times
720p (16:9) - three times
1024 x768 (4:3) - four times
1280x800 (custom) - five times
1280x1024 (5:4) - six times
1080p (16:9) - seven times
If you selected DVI/HDMI
640x480 (4:3) - press nothing
480p (16:9) - press the same key once
800x600 (4:3) - press it two times
720p (16:9) - three times
1024 x768 (4:3) - four times
1280x800 (custom) - five times
1280x1024 (5:4) - six times
1080p (16:9) - seven times
If you selected Component
HD480p - press press nothing
HD720p - press it once
If you selected Composite
PAL-B - nothing
PAL-D - press the down arrow key once
PAL-G - press it twice
PAL-H - press it three times
PAL-I - press it four times
PAL-K1 - press it five times
PAL-M - press it six times
PAL-N - press it seven times
PAL-NC - press it eight times
NTSC-J - press it nine times
NTSC-M - press it 10 times
If you Selected S-Video
PAL-B - nothing
PAL-D - press the down arrow key once
PAL-G - press it twice
PAL-H - press it three times
PAL-I - press it four times
PAL-K1 - press it five times
PAL-M - press it six times
PAL-N - press it seven times
PAL-NC - press it eight times
NTSC-J - press it nine times
NTSC-M - press it 10 times
Now that you have selected your resolution, hit the RIGHT ARROW KEY again to select your refresh rate. Keep in mind that you should consult your manual to determine your monitor/tv refresh rate correctly.
If you are using DVI/HDMI
50hz - nothing
60hz - press the down arrow key once
65hz - press it twice
70hz - press it three times
75hz - press it four times
80hz - press it five times
85hz - press it six times
***If you are using Component, composite, S-Video you do not need to select this setting.
After you have done all this hit the enter key and if you try what you set. It should work because all you are doing is navigating the menu "blindly." The computer is projecting an image but you just cant see it because its in VGA. With this method as long as you have a keyboard (wired, not wireless, just for failproof sake) then this should work.
Let me (and others) know if this works or not. Thanks!
-
Dude, this really isn't necessary.. If you look here:
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard
there is a set of keys you can press on your keyboard, to select the appropriate input.

I know it may work for some but that didnt work for me at all; even after multiple reboots and different keyboards and even different monitors. So I used the method I stated earlier and that did.

Hi,
Using the MB on-board 6100 VGA chip, no problem, it works. Using the PCIe 7600GS (DVI) with the default drivers (vesa), also works, BUT, when using the 7600GS (DVI) with the new NVIDIA (official) drivers, gives a nice black screen after the Ubuntu splash screen. Tried all "solutions" (pressed all the numeric keys and changed all the connections), and nothing solves this issue. Also followed some advice found in the forums (check logs, dmesg, etc) and did not see any problem or failure in the logs. Since the 7600 has more performance, I think it is preferred.
This is bugging me out. Since I started this because I wanted a better image quality/performance/geek factor from my media center (using Xbox+XBMC. It just works :-) )
Thank you for any help.

Ssh to you machine and type lspci, paste output here. Paste your xorg.conf file here.
-
Hi,
Ok, After the AVWizard, where I choose UI2, it gives me an error about "...transparency manager...". After that, I got the lspci and
xorg.conf info. Then ssh and installed the NVIDIA driver (compiled a new one, with Opengl compatibility and xorg.cong updated by the
installation process). Rebooted, and voilá: Black screen after the Kubuntu splash! Rebooted again, went in to recovery mode and got the
new xorg.conf.

Tried the numbers didn't help, DVI to VGA worked.
For some reason it used the DVI head on my card instead of the VGA one. No monitor was connected to the DVI output though.
Pressed 2 (for VGA) and waited for the beeps several times, eventually I tried all numbers nothing helped untill I read somewhere about the DVI to VGA solution.
-
I'll post up my experience so far with linuxmce 7.10 DVD version.
Initial setup went smoothly then it asked me to remove the dvd and reboot.
After reboot it gets part of the way through then stops at a screen with a flashing cursor at top left .... cut to the chase
Read around about it not working on dvi connector.... pressed 2 on keyboard it flashed to nothing then a second later the cursor comes up again.... I read everywhere for a way to fix it.... ended up finding that holding the shift key down after pressing 2 (to select the dvi mode) the av setup wizard would appear !!!
I've had this work a couple of times so far no vga connecters required! just press 2 then hold the shift key afterwards.
Good Luck
-
Pressing '1' selects HDMI/DVI mode, '2' selects VGA mode. Shift at this point does nothing.
-
I Read it here
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard)
perhaps it was 1 i had pressed ... or maybe 2 first then 1 after ?....
Extract from that site (Note: I have no internal speaker).
Alternatively, the AV Wizard can be started during bootup. Either hold down the Shift key on the keyboard, or press the "A/V Menu" button on the remote to make the A/V wizard start. During bootup you should hear a series of escalating beeps to tell you when LinuxMCE is monitoring the Shift (and "A/V Menu") keys.
When you hear the descending beeps it means that you're too late; the bootup has already gone past the AV Wizard check and LinuxMCE has already started.
I had restarted my pc by hard reset during install when it got to the black screen... then after a couple of tries at the 1-5 keys I found this guide and hold in the shift key to reveal AV Wizard.... Worked for me :)
-
Yes, you have misunderstood exactly what happened then. Let me clarify. I don't have speakers on mine either, you don't need them.
When your PC starts to boot, the first thing it will do is POST (Power On Self Test) - this is the BIOS doing hardware checks, and you will see various messages pop up, but most usually just a "splash" screen with the name of the mobo manufacturer, name of the BIOS company and press xyz to enter setup, etc). Once this is complete, it will hit the hard drive and start to load stuff.
The first thing you should see it load is the GRUB boot menu, and give you a 2 second count down to hit ESC to enter the GRUB setup menu. Once this passes, the Kubuntu loader screen will pop up with a horizontal progress bar moving from left to right (not all that very different from a Windows loader screen).
As soon as the Kubuntu loader screen comes up, press shift and hold it down until the progress bar gets to the right hand side. This will guarantee that the AV Wizard detects you are pressing it. In reality, the decending beep occur shortly after this screen comes up, and the ascending beeps shortly before it finishes - so you really only have to hit the button once somewhere in the middle. If you don't see the loader screen because your screen is already blank, that's fine - its right after the GRUB menu. So wait until the screen goes blank, then hold the button down for a minute or so.
Now that you are sure you are in the AV Wizard, even if you can't see it, you can now use the number buttons. The key things to remember here are:
1) If you have a blank screen with a cursor flashing, or a text only screen, especially if it periodically flickers and then comes back - this means that X was unable to start up, and therefore the AV Wizard could not start either. This is usually an indication of a driver issue, or possibly a xorg.conf configuration issue - see the wiki article called Display Drivers and review any errors in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
2) If your screen is just black or No Signal, now you can hit '1' for DVI/HDMI - but remember, this means the AV Wizard needs to shutdown, and X needs to terminate, reload the new config file, then start up again, and start AV Wizard again before you will get any picture. So after hitting any key, you need to wait at least 15 seconds before deciding that it hasn't done anything.

Hi there
I have also the problem with the black screen after the installation...
First of all my System has the following specs:
Mainb: Asus P5N32-E Sli
Graca: Asus Nvidia GTX 8800
Screen: Viewsonic VP2650wb connected by DVI
After the first Beep I can see a black screen with a blinking cursor flashing, after the second beep the screen turn into standby. I already tried the tricks with the numbers, pressing shift during start up - nothing has worked so far.
After several new starts it shows me from time to time (yes it's really randomly!):
Starting Samba [OK]
Restarting UPNP Meda Server fuppesd [OK]
somtimes also just Restarting UPNP Meda Server fuppesd _
between the two beeps after that the screen is going back into standby...
Does anybody have any suggestions?
Greez
P.S. please excuse me for my bad english... I hope you understand it :)

Do you have an onboard (on motherboard) graphics chip as well as a graphics card?

Do you have an onboard (on motherboard) graphics chip as well as a graphics card?
no...
some more information, what I have tried till now:
first I wanted to install MCE 7.10 with the DVD - it didnt worked. after the step "guessing about my BIOS" (something like that) it stopped even though the installer said it had founded it.
so i tried it with kubuntu 7.10 cd and the 2 MCE Discs with that it worked so far to the black screen. what i'm wondering, even though I have a Nvidia Card the installer of MCE didn't ask me about which UI I wanna use...
I also tried the second DVI-Port at the graphic card- same problem
I'm actually trying to reinstall kubuntu (CD) and then another MCE-Installation - I'm still hopeing it's gonna working....
or has anybody else a suggestion for me?

Could be any one of a number of problems but had to make sure you didn't have 2 GPUs first. Get your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and look for issues. You can pastebin it and put a link here as well for us to look if you wish.

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers
hey thanks a lot for your tips, were getting closer... :)
After I installed the NVIDIA Driver (in Kubuntu GUI, nvidia-glx-new) I installed LinuxMCE and I can see the AV Wizard... I couldn't install it like on the tutorial - it all ended up with an "http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=5503.0 (http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=5503.0)"failed to setup x"
But I have still some strange Errors...
I wanted to use 1080p, but the Ratio still standing on 4:3 and i think it;s still 640x480 probably 800x600
When I wanna launch MCE it's coming following error meassege:
Warning: you are using the nv driver. It is recommended that you use the nvidia driver. Do you want to run helper script to try to fix it (this can cause system to reboot?
Press Cancel if you want to close LMCE Launch Manager without running helper script.
When it's finally downloaded LMCE is starting and the error "Open GL isn't available" that only appears when I wanna launch MCE with U2 (without alphablending). But I can start it with U1... But with a Nvidia 8800 u2 should work, shouldn't it?
My actuall xorg log...
http://howflow.com/pastes/1198
Last but not least, when I wanna install my Win-TV-PVR-USB2 according to this tutorial: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-PVR-USB2
I'm getting following error: ERROR:Module ivtv does not exist in /proc/modules
after I typed in sudo rmmod ivtv
unfortunatley MCE doesn't find the card... :(
But I have to say I tried to install the driver in the usual Terminal, because when I hold Alt-Ctrl-2, nothing happen. If I try it with ALT-Ctrl-F2, I'm getting the same error like in the terminal...
Still any suggestions? And thank you for your patience...
Greez
P.S. should I open a new thread for my new problems?
-
just plug the USB2 in, LMCE should find it because we have a device template for it.
As for installing the nvidia drivers, you had to do this BECAUSE you're using a card not certified to work with the driver in 0710. You will not need to do this for 0810, because your card will work with the packaged driver.
Use recommended hardware, and the problems you are having will not happen.

after I plug the USB In, the Red (Power)Light turn of and LMCE doesn't find anything, when I plug in the USB first and give the device after that power, the Powerlight doesn't come at anytime... I'm guessing it has something to do with the driver, because I had the same problem on windows before I installed the driver...!

dammed I'm SO SORRY! You're right... I guess I was so surprised that everything of my hardware fitted, I forgot to check about the card... (I bought the hardware about a 1 1/2 y ago...)
Thanks for all help here, it's a really great forum...!

I'm not entirely sure why your tuner card isn't working...but I can say the red LED is actually if the tuner is active. It's only on when it's being used.
Can you give me the output of lsusb ?

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 2040:2900 Hauppauge
[..]
idVendor 0x2040 Hauppauge
idProduct 0x2900
[..]
This looks to be a newer version of the Hauppauge USB2 box. Currently, the PnP engine of lmce looks for idProduct = 0x2400
You might want to go to the webadmin, Advanced / Configuration / Device Templates. Search for hauppauge and PVR2USB and pick device template. You will see an entry PCI id 20402400.
Add another entry like that, with id 20402900
Save, unplug USB device, reboot, wait for reboot to finish, plug usb device in, and see what happens.
-
Actually, the 2900 is the older version, it has some hardware bugs that were fixed in the 2400 version.
But yes, as posde says, adding the additional USB ID into the device template should fix it. I'll add it here for 0810.

Hello, everyone...
First of all, I would like to say that through my use of lmce 0710, I found the software quite impressive and useful...there were glitches here and there, but in the broad sense, very cool stuff
and so I decided to try 0810 beta 2 (DVD/internet installation)
HOW I SOLVED THIS PROBLEM (step 12 is final solution):
(after going crazy with xorg.conf files, nvidia drivers, DVD installations, updates, internet installations, etc, etc for 4 days...)
well, apparently the 0710 installed fine with 1 nic, you just had to change some stuff once it was installed to work right with 1 instead of 2
but in 0810, it is a different story:
1. I installed Kubuntu 8.10 from the linuxmce DVD - install ran fine
2. sudo apt-get update - cool
3. sudo apt-get upgrade - awesome
4. Instead of running the linux mce installer script on the desktop, I used the instructions at http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/LinuxMCE-0810_beta#Internet_Installation (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/LinuxMCE-0810_beta#Internet_Installation) and ran the newest install scripts from there - all three ran fine...after a while
5. after the third script, restarted...it came up with the A/V wizard just fine (if it doesnt come up, this is a DIFFERENT problem, and can usually be solved by either hooking a monitor to the VGA port, using a DVI>VGA adaptor and hooking to that, or using the A/V wizard hot keys to activate the output you desire) - no problem so far
6. because of all the problems I was having, I selected the basic UI (no gl or alpha-blending) and told it to use the VGA at 640 x 480 - obnoxious, but functional
7. after completing the AVWizard, big text started appearing telling me about every package being installed and then said "Orbiter Regeneration" and began processing that - patience time
8. after getting to about the end of stage 2, I would end up with the infamous black screen with a white mouse cursor...that moved - obnoxious... but, considering this was at least my 8th attempt, expected
9. from another computer, I attempted to access the web admin page to see if it was functional - neither http://192.168.0.xxx or http://192.168.80.xxx worked
10. I pressed alt+F2 and logged into tty2 and typed "ifconfig"...nothing..."ifconfig -a" brought up eth0, pan0, and lo but none had IPs
11. "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" produced an interfaces error
***12. "sudo vim /etc/network/interfaces" showed that it was attempting to assign the static IP of 192.168.0.100 with no mask or gateway to eth0
---considering my router's DNS server starts at 0.100, that was already taken, so I modified the file to say another address that would not be in use, gave the mask of 255.255.255.0 and the gateway of 192.168.0.1...left the 192.168.80.1 stuff alone...and saved that***
13. another "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" and "ifconfig" revealed a now functional ethernet connection
14. "sudo reboot"
15. upon reboot, the big text returned, it went through the packages to "orbiter regeneration" once again, but after the orbiter finished regenerating...it KEPT GOING!
16. it started my devices, brought up the installation wizard with the videos, went through that, brought up UI1 and I finally felt some success
17. well UI1 at 640x480 is a terrible media center...so I rebooted and held shift to restart the AVwizard...then selected the mode that I actually wanted (with alpha blending)
18. after regenerating that orbiter, it works! I have a functional installation of MCE 0810!
I really hope this solves some problems out there, because a lot of other people seem to be going insane over the exact same problem, everybody was blaming the nvidia drivers, but if thats not it, check other devices and see if things are starting up right
thank you linux community for all the assistance and knowledge that led to yet another solution
-
hacking LMCE so that it works with only 1 NIC isn't solving problems, its creating them! please use it as it was designed, with 2 NICs, otherwise you are breaking a lot of its functionality and it certainly will not be supportable by the community... for the sake of a $15 NIC, its not worth it!
-
Check your xorg.conf and make sure "nvidia" is named under the "device" section. It might say "vesa" and this may cause it not to load.

Hi!
I'm a linux noob and I'd like to test out the LinuxMCE installation first before trying it out on a dedicated pc. However, I just have a laptop with integrated graphics (Intel HD) and tried to install it virtually. So far it worked up to the AV Wizard. After clicking the I Agree button it proceeded to the orbiter setup then after that one has completed everything went black (with mouse cursor).
I did try different video settings already but I still get the black screen after the orbiter thing. I checked my graphics properties including the display which says LVDS connector with 1366 x 768 supported mode. I saw that in the connector list in the AV wizard but the supported resolution is not listed there (does this matter?).
Is it just not possible to test out virtually with notebooks?
Any clarification is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

have istalled it on one pc fine.
After installation on the second pc i have had a black screen after one install/a white screen after another install, and when trying to force WVWizard on by holding down the shift key at start up i get red screen with cannot connect to X sever.
I have tried using the numered keys for lead type and resolution but this did nothing.
system below;(i hope this helps)
intel i7 cpu 950@3.07 ghz
Windows 7 64-bit(6gb ram)
geforce gtx 285(Nvidia)2gb
cuda cores:240
dedicated video memory 2048MB GDDR3
irq:24
2x nics on board.
tried disabling on board bios but did not know eactly what setting to change when in there,(need this explained in complete laymans terms....sorry)
also noticed mysql cannot connect through socket var when restarting.

Hey Guys,
I'm fairly new at this, I've tried all the usual fixes and still nothing.
I'm having issues adding a MSI Wind top AE1900-05SUS all-in-one as a media director. It goes through the usual pxe boot, announces itself to the router, then goes to the a/v wizard. All I get is a blank screen. I tried all the input number keys, and all the resolutions. It goes back to the command prompt, like it's switching resolutions, but I can't get the GUI. The Wind-top is a GMA950 video chipset. I've seen others use this video card in the forums with some success. I tried to take the Wind-top apart to try and figure out what interface it uses, but I can't tell. I tried using a usb video add-on card hooked to another monitor. I deleted the MD and retried. I tried going through the a/v wizard blind.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Marc

Did you try the 'letter' keys?

Yep, Still nothing..

Nevermind, I used the xorg.conf from here:http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/ASUS_EeeTop_ET1602
Thanks for your help.
