that board looks very nice. I'll put that on my list for any future mds/myth frontends I build. Looking at the specs everything appears to be linux ready. Ti chipset for firewire, realtek chipset for gigabit.. only question would be the ide/sata chipset
-
I have the GA-73VM-S2. Almost the same. It works with the Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 Beta 4 Live CD. I'm still running Fedora 8 until Linux MCE 7.10 is released and I'll reformat with it.
Looks promising as a core. I haven't connected it up to my tv. I could test and let you know how it goes.

I have one of these too, and I'm going to try and make an MD out of it. I'll post my expiriance here once I get to it ...

Well, I finally got to tinkering with this board and here's the first part of the report as promised...
I loaded it up with 2 gigs of ram and a Pentium Core2Duo 6550, a LG SATA dvd/rw and a WD 160 gb HDD, and decided to make a core/hybrid out of it.
0710B3 dvd install went smooth with special issues untill the AVwizard froze on the DTS test. I hit Ctrl+alt+F2 to try and unmute the spdif out, enter "alsamixer" and it's not there. I try to see what sound card I have just to discover the NO sound card was detected at all.
A quick google search tells me 2 things. What I have is a Realtek ALC889A HD Audio chipset and this thing has problems under windows as well.
A little more digging and I find that Realtek have released a set of linux drivers for this chipset. So I downloaded the driver and installed it, and now everything's working fine, including the AVwizard which does not freeze altough there's still no sound. I unmuted the spdif in alsamixer but still no sound. I might have a defected cable so I'm gonna buy one tomorow just to be on the safe side and continue from there.
More to come ...

Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H
http://www.gigabyte.co.nz/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2691&ProductName=GA-73PVM-S2H (http://www.gigabyte.co.nz/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2691&ProductName=GA-73PVM-S2H)
Looks promising. Can anyone confirm compatibility with 0710? Has anyone used this as a Media Director or Core?
We have not tested that board yet... but I can't see anything in the spec that should cause any problems at all. Looks a very nice board iindeed I agree :-)

That rocks. I was having problems with the audio as well. I will try beta 4 to see if the drivers are included else I will try downloading the Realtek Drivers. One should note that my motherboard has a small typo it does not have an onboard Gigabit NIC. It is only 10/100. I am currently involved with Fry's Marketing and Gigabit for selling products with the wrong specs on the packaging and in-store.

A quick update (and nt a very good one unfortunately ...)
So far nothing, and I mean NOTHING has been able to convince the onboard sound to work.
I've been working on it for 3 days now, tried anything I could find on the net, Realtek Drivers, Alsa 1.0.16 and anything else I could think of.
For the system the on board sound simply does not exist.
This is getting really annoying now... :(
God I hope B4 has had something done to it's sound drivers other wise I'm just about ready to give up...

A couple of quick questions
Did you start out with no playback devices at all after a fresh install (thus no alsa installed as well ...)
Your aplay -l output reads ALC662, while the only time I maneged to get something recognised it was ALC885 (tough it's supposed to be ALC889A ...) so are you strugling with the exact same board ?
What mode is your sata set to in the bios ?
Thnx

I started out with no playback with 7.10 and 8.04 Beta 4. It's set to ide, I'm having problem with it set to ahci.

I've added a wiki page (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Gigabyte_ga-73pvm-s2h) on this board with a description of what I've done so far and where I'm at.
Hopefully, some one will find this info helpfull or maybe even be able to pickup where I left off.

I had flip HDMI Audio in the BIOS from AUTO to DISABLED to get the optical out to work. Very annoying.

Ladies and Gents,
I haven't been to thrilled with my past 2 Gigabyte MicroATX Motherboards. Over the past month I've had so many problems with sound, and continual sata controller resets that could only be resolved by rebooting the box. A new hard drive and new sata cables did not remedy the problem. If I can't utilize the hard drive then I can't use Linuxmce.
I used the old hard drive successfully with Fedora Core 7 on the new motherboard without problems. I have made several discoveries. Let's start with the Kernel:
2.6.22-14 (Kubuntu)
*No sound with the nvidia sound card. Brute force method I posted earlier had to be applied to get it to work.
*Belkin F5D5005 Gigabit Desktop Adapter receives i/o error every 2 - 6 hours where all traffic stops and the machine has to be rebooted.
*Prolific USB to Serial Adapters did not work at all. I only have one serial port so that meant no W800RF or DSC 5401 on my system
*nVida Serial ATA Controller had resets ever few hours
2.6.24.3-34 (Fedora 8 )
Brief note on this kernel from the Fedora Website
======
2.6.24 includes CPU "group scheduling", memory fragmentation avoidance, tickless support for x86-64/ppc and other architectures, many new wireless drivers and a new wireless configuration interface, SPI/SDIO MMC support, USB authorization, per-device dirty memory thresholds, support for PID and network namespaces, support for static probe markers, read-only bind mounts, SELinux performance improvements, SATA link power management and port multiplier support, Large Receive Offload in network devices, memory hot-remove support, a new framework for controlling the idle processor power management, CIFS ACLs support, many new drivers and many other features and fixes.
======
*Sound out of the box - even with digital out
*Belkin F5D5005 Gigabit Desktop Adapter worked great
*Prolific USB to Serial Adapters work out of the box. W800RF and DSC5401 amongst others now work on my box.
*Zwave USB Device was the only working usb device other than my usb drive.
*nVida Serial ATA Controller is solid
Iptables + The linuxmce firewall gui = disaster.
I've used iptables in a dual nic setup for the past 7 years or so in this configuration for email and web on a sever and remote access on other
# - Interface eth1 is the internet interface
# - Interface eth0 is the private network interface
external_int="eth1"
external_ip="`ifconfig $external_int | grep 'inet addr' | awk '{print $2}' | sed -e 's/.*://'`"
/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -i eth1 -o eth0 -d 192.168.2.1 --dport 80 --sport 1024:65535 -m state --state NEW -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth1 -d $external_ip --dport 5900 --sport 1024:65535 -j DNAT --to 192.168.2.3:5900
Iptables no longer functions the same even after allowing all traffic to and from both interfaces. I'm still only able to access my server from behind the LAN, never from the WAN.
With all that being said, If a newer Ubuntu Kernel and modules could be used then I believe that the experience would be much better.
Hardy Heron 8.04 will be out before Linuxmce 7.10 is out of the oven. I'd be glad to come back to using Linuxmce when the Ubuntu Kernel gets a little better. As it stands, my hard drive won't work more than a day then I have to reboot.
Currently I'm back to Fedora Core 8 and using Misterhouse for my Home Automation and Mythtv for my pvr. My front/end backends are all connect to TVs or monitors so TV and Movies can be watched from any of them. I lack sending video to all frontends at once, but I can use the video out on my PVR-350 to an unmodulated cable channel and sound over speakers using a cheap stereo fm transmitter. Ugly but it works.
Linuxmce staff and developers let me know if I can do anything to help you achieve a rock solid product.
