Title: Lighting
Post by: richardZA on October 04, 2007, 09:53:08 am
Hi guys,

I'm trying to decided on a lighting system and i'm not keen on that zwave/x10 stuff at all!  Does anyone know another hardwired option that works well and isn't over priced like the lutron stuff...

I was thinking of using a weeder card but then i wouldn't be able to dim the lights...  I do however have dimmers in each light circuit already which can be controlled buy 0-10V or push and release( push and hold to dim up or down and tap to on/off).

Any input would be great.

Thanks guys
R

Does anyone know if LMCE works with DMX512 as this is the defacto standard when it comes to lighting?

I have a couple of dimmers and fixtures knocking around that I might look at getting working but would like to have LMCE control them.

If there is an interfacing component that you can make work under linux then should be quite easy to do. Serial (RS232) based stuff is pretty straight forward.

I have not seen anything that is done for this standard. The standard is more to do with stage/entertainment lighting isn't  it rather than home lighting - but I suppose it could work OK for home usage.

Yeah it is more for the professional lighting scene but its a solid fast protocol that is very reiliable. The main drawback is that it requires wiring to be installed and there are not 'lamp modules' etc like there are for X10 and zwave. I think for a new build then its a viable contender as it would be much cheaper than a closed protocol system.

Ive tried X10 but havent had much success. It seems to work well in one room but doesnt get very far. Also I find it quite slow. I know DMX quite well from my college days so maybe I will knock up an interface for my dimmers sometime..
