Title: howto: french translation
Post by: domotiqa.com on September 19, 2007, 03:31:46 pm
look's hard to translate the screens.

It's the same for translating the gui, I want to make it available in french but the tutorial are very short and no explicit !!

Here what I find !!
HA Designer not on the linuxmce web site - http://files-upload.com/files/454340/winbin.zip (thanks to http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2173.0)
But, need windows and look's a little bit complex

Need to go in mysql database (I guess):
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Translate_the_GUI_into_another_language

But, need windows and look's a little bit complex
Quote
Soft installed on windows
If you Ignore the error you can get to the configure option where you can see the ODBC connection string.   You need the mysql odbc connector, and also configure your LMCE mysql server to accept connections from outside.

Designer also needs skins from the LMCE machine.   Those come from a folder available on the LMCE machine (just copy them).  Sorry I don't remember offhand exactly where.
(thanks to http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2173.0)

Is there any body who's got full process ?

I'm also interested to have possibility to translate LMCE GUI and admin site to Russian. Is there some way to localization of LMCE?

Thanks in advance.

I guess two only way is to:

1/ install mysqladmin, then go in linuxmce_main_database then modify texts
2/ Use winbind (HAdesigner) on windows and connect to linuxmce core (the hard part), then change the gui !!!

If any one's got a how to detailed, would be great, because translation can go quick !!

It's the easiest but not fully correct way. For admin site should be used common practice for localization i. e. create description file for desired language and just choose it in configuration. For GUI I'm not sure how to do the localization in proper way.

Hi,

I'm also dying for some more documents about translation of GUI or addition of certain screens to GUI (I'd like to create incoming doorphone call screen, similar to incoming call, but with camera shown)...

Anyone that can get us started ?

Regards,

Bulek.

To start:
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Translate_the_GUI_into_another_language

then
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2635.msg12586#msg12586

I think we will have to make a svn branch for translation, in order to have the latest version !
Have to figure out how to become developper in svnSql

Ok, here is the first version of the french translation !!
Take care, cause english language will be lost after importing data. However, you can backup sql tables with  the utility bellow:
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2635.0

Process:
1/ download linuxmceFR-1.1.sql from link next post

2/ import data (english language will be lost):
Code: [Select]
sudo mysql pluto_main<//path_to_file/linuxmceFR-1.1.sql
3/ change in admin website of lmce the default langage to french for every orbiter
4/ make a full regen of orbiter

I'd like that people who will work on the translation name the file as bellow:
linuxmceFR-1.1.sql
linuxmceFR-1.2.sql
linuxmceFR-1.3.sql
....

and post in this post in order that people who'll work with the latest version!

I still got one problem with translation!
Some words are not present in the Text_LS and Text table !!
For example, most terms used in tv, media, pictures, LiveTV Internal... are not int it !!! I guess the id is not present in the database !!!
Any idea how to help and why some are not in it ??

  Bonjours Gilles,

 I guess some parts are in mythtv xine and and other apps, however you can change the language ( la langue as we call it back home) from mythtv setup.

 Hope this help,

Bonne continuation.

Do you mean on the main screen of the Orbiter? There are pictures I guess not text labels. So, you have to replace them with French captions. BTW, nice work. I'm going to make Russian translation and your experience is very useful!

Also, I cannot find the language column in the table Text. If I understand clearly my translation will be replace English one?

hello both,

nite_man: yes on the main screen of the orbiter! If you're wright, do you know where the pictures are stored?
Yes your translation will replace the english one ! The other solution is to add a langage in langage table (ID 3 for example), then to change the second parameters to the wright ID of the langage table (3)

INSERT INTO `Text_LS` (`FK_Text`, `FK_Language`, `Description`, `psc_id`, `psc_batch`, `psc_user`, `psc_frozen`, `psc_mod`, `psc_restrict`) VALUES
(317, 3, 'Mehr', 3, NULL, NULL, 0, '0000-00-00 00:00:00', NULL),
(318, 1, 'Drop Call', 4, NULL, NULL, 0, '0000-00-00 00:00:00', NULL),

3 are deutsch, 1 is english !
Then restart system !

deffcon: does your translation translate all terms ?? Or do you have some word still in english ? Or did it come from the TextCategory table ?

Hey Guys,
we had a discussion about tranlsating LMCE on the dev mailing list, too. Michal is working on a Czech translation, Michael is working on a Russian translation and I finished a German (re)translation (the old one sucked a bit).

Michal also pointed out some problems with the character sets, i.e. the text fields in the database are latin1_swedish but treated as being utf-8. Michal also offered to improve utf-8 handling.

Cheers,
/Chriss

Are all of the strings in LMCE that can be translated all in records in the database? None are hardcoded into, say, C++ (or Ruby, or other language) code, or in HTML files, etc? Of course the bundled apps (like Asterisk, MythTV, etc) each have their own translation processes, but if LMCE's text is all in the DB, that's yet another win for LMCE (and its programmers/translators).

Now, if only the GUI styles were all factored into stylesheets and interchangeable skin templates...

Unfortunately not all strings are in the DB...  :( But this can be fixed, I guess.

Is there a simple description of where the rest are, or a simple technique (or a script written) to find them? Seems to me that whole files like HTML need not be stuffed into the DB (though I do like the idea), but rather just stored in file blobs that the DB points to, so the DB can point to a translated set of them when they exist, and just switch in the DB to set language.

Well, there's some other tables in the DB holding strings for different parts of LMCE, i.e. not all text is stored in Text/Text_LS. Furthermore there are hard coded string arrays for orbiter generation (Michal Wokoun pointed that out on the mailing list). Because of that I see two steps that need to be done for full translation:

edit: BTW, I didn't spot those ugly arrays yet, i.e. if anybody has an idea... ;)

Furthermore there are hard coded string arrays for orbiter generation (Michal Wokoun pointed that out on the mailing list). Because of that I see two steps that need to be done for full translation:
  • Modify the code to move those hard coded arrays into the DB
  • Find a way to translate all strings stored in the DB, either by
    • defining overlay tables for all tables or by
    • modifiying the DB and the code to have all strings in a single table (the better way, I think)

edit: BTW, I didn't spot those ugly arrays yet, i.e. if anybody has an idea... ;)

If every translatable string could be found, then a simple script could use, say, Google translate to translate LMCE into each of its many different languages. The translations would suck, but LMCE would at least be gotten over the border to the other language, wherein it could be much more easily "debugged" for style and accuracy by a native speaker who doesn't actually know English. Probably 90% of the translation time could be automated, the initial version would probably be (barely) usable by foreign speakers, and a much larger pool of "translation debuggers" could work on the rest, than tackle the initial job of actual translation. Could make LMCE global in one go.

The original German translation looked like it was done by google or some automated way. Basically I agree that it could be done, but I preferred using the English strings to retranslate and not use the German strings - about 50% of them were totally unsusable.

Hy, in fact I still have some words still english ! I'll look to the picturesq path, to see what I can change !
You can change langage for orbiter by the pluto-admin website ! To create a langage file , you have to add it in the langage table of lmce mysql db then modify text LS tabmle with the index created in the langage table!
Some words look also to be in text category and in the path as nite man explained !

Hy, I'm french too

Sorry for my poor english ...

-> DOMOTICA :
What is your percent of traslation ? you have finished ? DO you need some help ?
How can i help , whitch part is not translate ?
Is-it possible to share our work to the french linuxmce community ?
Should we ask to linuxmce developper to put this work of translation for futur build ?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i think linuxmce is based on applications ( MythTV, Xine, Asterisk, Pluto, ... ) who have french translation. So, we juste translate scripts who joint these application ?

Thank you for your help.

Our lmce french users community grow up !

->Tigre-Bleu : I didn't know launchpad, it seem to be a good way for translate a project. I'm more newbee than you !

If we want to translate lmce, i think we shoud work on the beta version (0710 beta 3).

I'm not a team leader and i have never participate to  a developpement project. So I dont' kow how can we organise and dispatch the work. someone has idees ?

I'll do in couple days a new sql file from scratch for the 0710 version!
I'll put:
- sql file from "Text_LS"
- sql file from ""Text_Category"
- images from /usr/pluto/orbiter/skins/Basic/ ...

I guess if people are interresting to help, we can cut thes sql file in several part and each person can make contribution !

hi, the untranslated stuff on the main screen are indeed pictures, but created by OrbiterGen from strings out of CommandGroup table.
this table is rewritten/updated by UpdateEntArea in (every? - I think) OrbiterGen run, so I guess by monday I'll have a patch ready for OrbiterGen and UpdateEntArea, after which you will be able to translate this normally in Text_LS table :)

actually I have it already working here, but the code needs a litlle ;) cleanup

sorry, I don't quite understand what you meant with the "not independant of the code". Because tables Text/Text_LS still are independant. If you meant those <%=Txxx%> anchors in CommandGroup table - these are standard lmce variable substitution codes and AFAIK even some variation to these can be found in Text_LS allready.

but if I'm missing the point completely, please let me know :)

ok, so continue the thread:

from the great and nice translate script under:

I change some parameters for french then get the WWW-Babelfish perl script:

http://search.cpan.org/CPAN/authors/id/S/SA/SAMV/Lingua-Translate-0.09.tar.gz

then

After unpacking the tar file, do the usual in each downloaded tar:

make test

ok, I make the first release of french "pack" !
It includes 90% of the text_ls table changed from english to french ! It's a major part of google translation however I manually change some main used terms!

Still some terms that can not be translate from this table !!! I'll have a look with the fix made by LadislavH (for all word in text_ls table)

Here are the files:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxmce-fr/

create_fr_file.sh: script for creating english snapshot of the db (only fk_text,description of english text_ls table record)
text_ls.csv: text_ls word "translated in french"
insertdb.sh: script for inserting the new french translated record with the french langage id

PS:   if people know how to translate the still remaining terms (are the patch still working - i will investigate)
PPS:  if people make some improvmnet on my personnal translation publish it , thanks
PPS:  these script (taken from brsisr and modified) can be easyli modify

did you put text_ls.csv in the folder ?
did you try with sudo ?
try
mysql -u USER -h HOST -e "insert into  \`pluto_main\`.\`Text_LS\` (FK_Text,FK_Language,Description) values(2050,2,test);" --default-character-set=utf8

and go have a look in the db in you've got the langage id=2 for francais in langage table
and in text_ls table if you've got the string 2050, langage 2,test

Hi domotica.com !

I've find the problem !

First, I've not "Francais" but "French" in the language table.
Second, a coma was missing for the dbip variable
Third, I've have a ^ on each end of lines.

I've correct all of those and it worked now.

Thank's !
Philippe

Here the modified script:

Code: [Select]
#### Global variables
lang_id=2;
lang_desc='Francais';
char_set='utf8';
###char_set='koi8r';
###char_set='cp1251';
###char_set='cp866';

dbuser='root';
dbip='localhost';
#### End Global variables

### create language entry
mysql -u$dbuser -h$dbip -e "insert into  \`pluto_main\`.\`Language\` (PK_Language, Description , psc_id) values ($lang_id ,\"$lang_desc\",$lang_id );"

mysql -u$dbuser -h$dbip -e "delete from pluto_main.Text_LS where FK_Language =$lang_id;"

### Read the first string id for english language

#! /bin/bash

while IFS=, read numero description
do
echo -e "insert ----   numero:$numero,description: $description\n"
#### insert the translated string back to DB
   mysql -u$dbuser -h$dbip -e "insert into  \`pluto_main\`.\`Text_LS\` (FK_Text,FK_Language,Description) values($numero,$lang_id,$description);" --default-character-set=$char_set

done < text_ls.csv
