Title: play dvd across network
Post by: archived on August 23, 2005, 03:49:47 pm
I have just re-installed pluto as a hybrid and want to know is there a way to play a dvd on a remote media director (network stream) with the disk in the cores dvd drive? I have had a play with media scenarios but can't quite figure it out. Is this possible or does the dvd have to be ripped to the cores hdd first?

it's certainly possible technologically, end of the underlying players we use xine and VLC, both do this already.  The only part that is missing is we don't have a button to do this in the user interface, and if you start the media in one room and move it to another, the media plug-in doesn't properly set everything up.  so will not be a big deal to add this functionality, but we just haven't gotten around to it, and it hasn't been a big priority since nobody has really asked for its before you.

Hi,

I'd just like to add my support for putting in a streaming feature, for both dvds and cds, as I won't be able to store all of my media in the core. So being able to just stick a cd or dvd into the core and stream it without copying first would be great.

Even better, would be if it could do the same with a normal PC-style data dvd with avis on it.

Even better than that would be if you could stream to the whole network by not only putting a cd/dvd in the core, but by putting it in the MD as well.

Merely suggestions for improvements - hope you don't think I'm demanding anything!

No I'm afraid not! I'm just someone who has been looking into using Pluto, and I think that those features would be very useful to me and lots of other people. When you said that "apap" was the first person to have asked for that feature, I just thought I'd say that I think it would be very useful too.

In my experience, it's always nice to know what people want, before you go and do something they don't want  :P

you're absolutly right, and we know that this feature is kind of needed, technologicaly.
at this poit you can't do that, you can only play a disc loacly.
we are trying to find some answers to this problem, there something that has to be done, we know.

Hi Dan,

You can do this with VLC now. Just add VLC to your MD's using the 'Computing' button from the main menu. Then click Computing-vlc on an MD to launch VLC. Now in VLC use File-Open Disc on the MD you want to stream from. Select 'DVD (menus)' or 'DVD' then the 'Stream output' tick box...now click 'Settings' and click 'UDP' and enter an address like '228.1.1.1' and a port no. (select 'Play locally' if you want to see the stream on this MD as well). Next hit 'Enter' to close the dialog and your stream will start. By the way you can just as easily stream a DVD or Audio CD that you have already ripped to your Core...just use File-Open File and navigate to your /home/public/data/movies directory and open the content from there.

Now go to a second MD and click Computing-vlc to launch VLC. Now click File-Open Network Stream and then select 'UDP/RTP (Multicast)' and enter the streams address you entere above - '228.1.1.1' and the port no. Now click 'OK' or hit enter and you should see the stream start to play on your MD's screen. Do this on any number of MD's on your network to watch the stream.

Obviously it will be even better when this can all be achieved withing the Pluto UI without having to use the 'Computing' menu...but it does worth fine nevertheless.

yes, you're right, but this is when you want to play a stored dvd.
how about a dvd-disc?

Hi Dan,

The above works fine for both content stored on the Core (or another device on the network) and a DVD/CD disc in the MD's drive. The streaming performance is great either way. Give it a try.
