In the admin site does your MD list your sound card and is it set to the sound card you are using? Do you have both integrated sound on your motherboard and a sound card? If so disable the integrated sound in your motherboard's BIOS (assuming you want to use the sound card). If you want to use the integrated sound remove the sound card.
Title: I had actually found a few posts about the disable integrated sound in the BIOS

The intel card was integrated ... but I just went and bought a cheep Trust 5.1 card and threw that in ... it worked with this when I followed those same directions you just gave, I had found them on the ubuntu site as well. so now it works, I have surround sound and even the coax S/PDIF is working. Thanks for the help......
