Title: Cable Card Support
Post by: babakrezai on May 16, 2007, 05:09:34 am
It would be really nice if LinuxMCE would support cable card so we could watch Digital Cable with this fantastic program,
what kind of hurdles does it face before it can be implemented? The Tivo is nice but linux can do a lot more.

If I'm not mistaken, MythTV already supports a multitude of cable cards...
Do you have one now?  What kind/model?

Chances are it's supported by myth, and you should be able to find drivers for it..
mythtv supports a HUGE library of tuner cards, ATSC, DTV, Cable, DVB-T, DVB-S, DVB-A, etc..

Hope this helps,
(I'm just browsing while linuxmce 1.1 downloads :))

Good Luck, let us know if you find support for your card...

I believe babakrezai is referring to CableCARD, not a capture card capable of recording digital cable.  CableCARD is a small plug-in card that allows you to view encrypted digital cable in the US.  CableCARD was touted as an alternative to renting a set-top box from the cable company.  I believe the Tivo Series3 and Vista Media Center are currently the only DVR's on the market that support CableCARD.  The Cable companies don't like CableCARD, and you have to jump through numerous hoops to license it (just ask Tivo).  I highly doubt that it will be available legally for Linux for quite some time.
