Jury is out still...

$35 and possibly can stream to it like a squeezebox. I'm reading the APIs and checking to see if that is possible. Maybe...

The Chromecast is a little different in that the remote device instructs the Chromecast to stream a particular piece of content after that the remote device merely acting as a remote control. You don't stream to Chromecast.

Update 2: We just got a statement from a Google spokesperson which addressed the main concern:

We’re excited to bring more content to Chromecast and would like to support all types of apps, including those for local content. It's still early days for the Google Cast SDK, which we just released in developer preview for early development and testing only. We expect that the SDK will continue to change before we launch out of developer preview, and want to provide a great experience for users and developers before making the SDK and additional apps more broadly available.

I would be happy enough if anybody could change the browser plugins so that it would fire a mediascenario when sending a youtubevideo to the chromecast. This way av receiver or TV would change inputs to the connected chromecast...
are the plugins even open source?  ???

Chromecast device is nothing more than a webapp (or fake one sending http calls as needed) to both receive and send the chromecast commands. where I got stuck was how I would go about faking a web app. Well that and any extra dev cycles not named qorbiter say phillips hue...
