Title: Upgrading. Is it safe yet? (ALL video cards but nVidia GTxxx cards specifically)
Post by: l3mce on September 14, 2012, 04:44:41 pm
*edit- looks like the answer is no for right now.

I broke the heck out of avwizard a week or so back. Specifically the audio configuration scripts were crashing it. I am sorry for the frustration this caused, but I was trying to get all of the new generation of nvidia cards to work correctly out of the box.

I believe I have now achieved this, based on the few tests I have been able to perform. If you have an nVidia GT xxx card or ion 2 (which is a GT 218 I believe)... you SHOULD have a working config that will play audio in AVWizard and MDs now over HDMI. Feedback would be greatly appreciated. All other cards SHOULD be unbroken now as well. So just update and upgrade... run AVWizard and report back whether success or fail.

Please give me the output of lspci -nnk | grep VGA -A3     in either case

IF there is a problem, please paste your /etc/asound.conf file
IF there is a problem, please paste the output of sudo aplay -l

If you have oddball sizing issues in AVWizard that are NOT resolved through selection, please paste your current xorg.conf. Removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.pluto.avwizard and rebooting WILL resolve it. I am trying not to do that automatically for people with custom xorgs.

There is a new snapshot cooking as we speak as well. This new snapshot SHOULD be our best yet, including a working live boot.

If sound is missing on some files, I doubt that it is a matter of the install procedure or the card. My money would be on a missing codecs in the media players we use.

Thank you bushtech.

The problem with bushtech's md creation and upgrade was that his diskless image was very old, so the addition of the backport install did not exist when the nvidia driver was installed, and once he upgraded and rebooted, on boot it saw the correct nvidia driver was installed, so it did not check the backports, assuming it was already done. I have changed the detection routine to check this regardless of the state of the video driver. It will be built later today or tomorrow.

So... for people upgrading

Delete/rebuild your MD image.
After first boot (which will install the correct driver depending on the age of your system), update and upgrade the MD, and reboot.
If your tv does not like the output (only some tvs), rm /etc/X11/xorg.con* and reboot.

Alternatively, you can upgrade your core, and run /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh.
Then create/rebuild your md and everything should work.

This only affects upgrades, and only affects the GT xxx series nvidia. Existing snapshot will work fine regardless.

Thanks bushtech!

The reason it WAS card 0 was due to us hacking the alsa-base.conf because I could not make anything work on card 1.

Thanks to Uplink for adding that "card selection" code to avwizard on step 5.

l3mce,
I'm going to rebuild my MD (with the GeForce GTX 550 Ti) this weekend and see if ithe fixes work for me.

Well... we should talk about that...

I dunno about that guy. What should be done is, as we have done in the past, drop video driver from 295 to 260, and add it to alsa-backports, and try that route first. That is what I would hope works best, and is the easiest to deal with.

In your situation, I would fully upgrade the core, and create a new diskless image, running the TBZ script. I would add the MD, and then catch it when it tries to reboot. Just unplug it or whatever. That is very important, and boring... waiting for it to reboot itself. It really can't get past the post screen when rebooting or it can sort of screw up the experiment. Then navigate to the /usr/pluto/diskless/**/usr/pluto/bin/nvidia-install.sh file to make these changes... then boot.

It would be very cool if that worked. If it did not, then simply delete the MD and plug it in and let it auto-do.

Really appreciate your patience with that very frustrating card. If NEITHER of those work, I will try and put something together that upgrades your kernel as well, however I have found nothing from nvidia which says it wont work on our kernel.

l3mce...   it is a rainy day here... too muddy to do any work outside... so I got some time.

can you post what I need to 'modify' in nvidia-install.sh?

I can tell you that with the stock kernel,  alsa does not even see the HDMI audio stuff... even if I install the backports-modules-alsa for the kernel.

I do know that once a 2.6.35 or greater kernel is installed, the audio hardware is seen by alsa.

So... Ive already upgraded today.  Ive rerun Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh... and am standing-by for further instructions!!!!

Does Intel require us to rebuild MD images on upgrade, or is that only the nVidia GTs???...

Thanks.

In nvidia-install.sh

1. Get your pciid
lspci -nn | grep -w 'VGA' | sed 's/.*://;s/\].*//'

2. Make sure your pciid is NOT in "DRIVER_295_SUPPORTED" but instead in, "DRIVER_260_SUPPORTED"

3. Make sure your pciid IS in "Backports_Required"

That is really it for that. You might also add: checkAlsaBackportNeeds       to line 668 of Utils.sh under the function CheckVideoDriver()
so it looks like:
Code: [Select]
if [[ "$prop_driver" == "$cur_driver" ]] && [[ "$cur_driver" == "nvidia" ]] && [[ -n "$online" ]]; then
StartService "Checking nVidia driver" ". /usr/pluto/bin/nvidia-install.sh"
checkAlsaBackportNeeds
current_nvidia=$(getInstalledNvidiaDriver)
preferred_nvidia=$(getPreferredNvidiaDriver)
if [[ "$current_nvidia" != "$preferred_nvidia" ]]; then
cur_driver="wrongnv"
online_mismatch="true"
fi
fi

This would be the place to begin.

JaseP
You need to get the new code to a new MD. You can either upgrade the core and run Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh and create the new MD... or you can create the MD, watch it fail... upgrade it... and rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf*  then reboot. If you have an existing broken MD... you can just do the upgrade and xorg.conf cleanse.

Either way.

Well,...

Here's something that's gonna toss yer noodle around,... (Keep in mind, this is a net installed 1004 that I just ran the upgrade on, don't know if that matters)...  I made the bone headed move of not only deleting my MDs (decided rebuilding was easier), nothing to report on that yet,... But, I also (here's the bone headed part) deleted my xorg.conf from the Core thinking it'd automatically dump me into the AVwizard to reset the Core's xorg.conf (old xorg.conf renamed to xorg.oldone and left in the directory),... That didn't happen... in the least.

Here's the thing,... The Core/Hybrid booted graphically,... UI2 and all,... There's NO xorg.conf in the /etc/X11 directory, just the xorg.oldone,... and the typical Kubuntu auto Xsession crapolla you get from a standard Kubuntu 10.04 install...

But so far, everything appears to work... MythTV,... Live TV playback,... KDE desktop, etc., etc...

Let me know if there's something I should try to run to see if running it this way breaks anything... But for now,... I'm just going to keep running it this way,... rebuild my MDs, and see if it affects anything...

Oh,... Forgot to mention, Intel chipsets on everything.

I don't know why upgrades do not work the same as fresh installs. Net/dvd... its just... I dunno. I am just trying to work it out now. Intel, due to the way it deals without abstraction is much more well behaved than the others, and orbiter just reads/does what the database tells it to do. You might find some quirks... but I would expect it to work for the most part.

Now... why avwizard isnt running... thats... a bit strange.

I would try and login with sudo -i, then run /etc/init.d/a0start_avwizard from command line. If that doesn't kickstart it, bash -x /etc/init.d/a0start_avwizard  and see what it actually does.

Then try
. /usr/pluto/bin/Utils.sh; CheckVideoDriver

and see what that does. AVWizard SHOULD run. If avwiz is crashing... then get me a log explaining why (/var/log/pluto/AVWizard_Run*datetime*.log) or maybe /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I'll look into running the checks, but as far as forcing the AVwizard,... Right now I'll take a pass,... it seems... inordinately well behaved... curious... Can't put my finger on it,... but it seems snappier, and less quirky than before... Maybe just psychological... I have no metrics to offer,... just anecdotal... I'd rather take readings on it right now if you don't mind... I don't want to change it just yet...

Update on the MD end,... The AVwizard failed to present a suitable first selection screen for video resolution on my primary MD,... Also Intel, a GMA3150, I believe,... Video output is to VGA (adapter from DVI port) to a Sanyo 42" TV w/ VGA input... I had to drop out to KDE desktop, use its (xrandr?) resolution settings to move to the auto-detected 1920x1080, open a terminal window, delete the default xorg.conf, ... reboot,... and only then was I presented with usable AVwizard screens... Had to do that the very first time I set up that machine though on my original 1004 net install... Don't know if it's quirky hardware... PITA,... but I have non-standard hardware,... I guess I need to expect a little of this...

If you want any logs from that machine,... let me know which/what/when/how...

Thanks.

This looks like the same thing my upgraded core has been doing.  I'll try to have a look later today and see if I can chase it down on my core, could be the same issue that others are having.

There are now at least 4 reports of this behavior.

So... thank you folks for giving it a go... but for now... the answer to the thread title is no until I work out this kink.

Note also,...

I adjusted the resolutions.conf to enable 1360x768 & 1366x768 resolutions for one of my Sanyo TVs,... After deleting the xorg.conf and going into the AVwizardmand selecting the resolution, what I got was 1280x720,... and after manually editing the xorg.conf, I was left with on-screen Orbiters that would not adjust their size, after attempting a full regen. (Web Admin confirmed resolution Imwas looking for).

Maybe I'm forgetting something I did the first time around, when I had first gotten it working, months ago & prior to update...

PS edit: The AVWizard_Common.sh needs to be edited too [ ... does face-palm ...] ... I HATE Sanyo TVs...

Ok... thanks to phenigma for working this one out.

net installs have a file /etc/inittab
After the upgrade it is an issue becuase the startup scripts are no longer in rc5.d and the runlevel gets switched by inittab to 5 before S99a0start_avwizard is executed in runlevel 2.

I need to change the upgrade process to remove this file for the new boot functionality to work. So... those of you with no avwizard, move this file somewhere and reboot. I expect you will have avwizard.

Does the presence of the inittab file affect MD creation (carry over into the compressed file the diskless setup script generates)??? Could that be mucking up my two squirly MDs with odd resolutions and the AVwizard?

Core and Living Room MD are working fine. Well... after I wrested the Living room MD into submission on a separate resolution issue.

My Master Bedroom & Dining Room MDs are the ones with an unsupported resolution. Had it working before upgrade, but changing the Resolutions.conf and the AVWizard_Common.sh to reflect those resolutions isn't working in getting me to the AVWizard... Just black-screens out on me when trying. I can't tell if this related to this issue or not. (Note: I get AVwizard on creation, just no decent, usable resolutions, and then can't get back to the AVWizard reliably).

If this inittab thing is the likely issue, then I'll give that a shot,... but otherwise, or if nobody's sure, I'll just pull 'em off the system, at least for now. I could always put them back on later, and they're not really getting used, anyway (low WAF factor from SWMBO). Plus it'd give me experience in getting LinuxMCE media file access to other systems on the network.

inittab does not affect md creation.  If you have this problem then you would have no avwizard at all, ever.

What have you upgraded, and what haven't you?

What should be discussed here, is ONLY machines that are running the latest code from the latest updates. If your other machines have funky resolution and are not upgraded, upgrade them. There are a LOT of fixes to the entire process.

Quit being so damned cautious. Move the file. Reboot. Report the result. If it doesn't work or makes things worse... move it back if you want.

I rebuilt the MDs wholesale after the upgrade of the core. So, the only technical problems, I can see, are the inittab, or some esoteric effect on non-supported resolutions... Phenigma says it's not the inittab... so... anyway...

The REAL problem isn't the technical side of things in getting it to work, ... If I divorce myself from all else that is happening I can handle it,... get it working, etc. ...

The REAL problem,... It's the "I can't stand your gadgets controlling everything!," affect I get from SWMBO & the kiddies, when I'm an absolute grouch when my [expletives deleted] doesn't work... I'm sure you know the feeling... I don't want somebody else divorcing themselves from me... Been through that once... Once! Believe it or not (you probably don't), the first one wasn't my fault, ... she suffered from OCD & bipolar, wouldn't continue meds or treatment,... and it was just time to throw in the towel (and every Douglas Adams fan knows that you are ALWAYS supposed to carry your towel)... ... TMI, I know...

Anyway, a scaled back system isn't all that bad,... less to worry about,... and more time to devote to trying to contribute the xterm feature ... and the permissions fixes that'll probably have to go along with it... This has stalled my research and work on that... not good.

I'll figure out the resolution stuff, eventually, ... If you are concerned from the standpoint of how it affects your work (loose end?!),... Please let me know... I'll investigate further ... time permitting ... But, for now,... back burner,... & probably my error(s) anyway...

move... the f@#$ing... inittab.

You are miscommunicating with each other.

He is referring to your MDs, which do not HAVE an inittab. Your intel, net install, does. Your intel, net install, after latest upgrade, does not EVER see avwizard.

You are one of 3 people who posts who has an intel chipset. I need this tested and confirmed. It is like pulling teeth to get you to help me help you... and the WHOLE thing, would take less than 5 minutes of your time... and after 2 days... you are saying... "nah".

You don't have to. It is your equipment... but do not ever, EVER, ask me a question again.

(re)Moving the inittab causes the AVWizard to spawn,... after re-selecting the appropriate settings, rebooted... Hung on reboot so I eventually did a cold boot,... I've seen that in the past, though unrelated to any changes with the latest update. After the cold boot, they sysyem asked to regen all MDs,... After bith MD and Core/Hybrid came up... All functions appear normal afterward...

Tadaa

THANK YOU. I don't know why I get so frustrated in the wee hours of the morning. I do really appreciate it.

Ok... that cold boot thing. My old optiplex did that too. I need to create a ticket now and figure out why that happens. I thought it was just my crap equipment. I really do appreciate your time and dedication to the project. I know that my behavior annoys you. You are, since the first time we butted heads, the one walking the high road. I come across as a bully. It is just terribly frustrating that you seem unwilling to do anything that is asked of you. It was like pulling teeth to get you to look into the source (to help you do what you want). It was like pulling teeth to get you to make the virtual terminal the right way (to help you do what you want). It is like pulling teeth to get you to do something as simple as moving a file to fix your core (to help you do what you want). All of these things also help others, and it makes me want to pull my hair out. I and the others will bend over backwards to help you... but only if you take that help, instead of fight it. On that note... I have not seen your ticket with your work on terminal so I can look at it and help where I can. Upload soon, update often.

I am sorry I let my frustration get the better of me. Thank you very much for testing.

Still researching the issues with the xterm thing; standard NIS keyfile practices, LinuxMCE user/password creation & maintenance. Since I don't code and my shell scripting skills are rusty, it's taking longer than I wanted it to.

Hi,

i'm facing problems with sound in some video files, specially mkv and mp4. Some mp4 plays audio and video well, others only audio and plays sound when extension is changed from mp4 to m2ts (which makes mplayer to play it instead of xine).
Some mkv do not outputs sound even changing the suffix from mkv to m2ts.

The output from aplay -L is:

yes... I have a hint...

I have no idea how to solve atm... I am trying very hard to unbreak avwizard with my latest changes, and just uploaded some changes which I believe will bring ALL chipsets stereo hdmi audio.

Of course... that isn't what you asked me.

The hint is... xine is working, mplayer isn't.

Lol, if this were true, i would not need to change the prefix to make it play  ;D , but maybe some codec is missing, etc...

Whatever, i will find out why and how... i was only asking if someone have this issue and was able to solve, so time is optimized...

I'll tell you when i get the answer.

Stereo audio on HDMI for everything should be working with latest update.

Nothing 5/7.1 will be.

Also new mesa packages give improved performance on all of my stuff. New storage radars should drop this week as well.
