Title: New installation
Post by: Asantesani on September 14, 2011, 12:14:53 pm
 Hi !
I am new here ant to linuxMCE.
I need help and info on how to setup (if possible) such installation.

1st room - 1 TV set, 1 projector, 1 satellite decoder - need to play movies from library, music, record programs from tv onto library
2nd,3rd, 4th room each - 1 tv set with 1 sattelite decoder - needs same as above
bathroom - play music, no equipment - only cables and speakers

What equipment do i need and how to set it up to suit my needs?

Thanks for any help. It is the house of my boss and he almost forced me to do it for him.

You will find lots of examples in the wiki http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Category:User_Setups (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Category:User_Setups)

But basically, you need one core (I would go for a separate core, as you have 4 places you want to play media), and 4 MDs. Alternatively you could combine one MD and the Core into a Hybrid, but I'm not sure I would recommend that here.

For the satellite you have two options. Either you can have LMCE control the decoder using IR, and just connect the decoder to the TV directly. This setup won't allow you to record anything though.
Second option is to have a TV-card in your MD or Core. What card and how depends on the satellite broadcast. If you can get a tv-card that decodes your particular satellite broadcast using a CAM/CI combination, I would go for that. If not, you need some device like the HD PVR that encodes the output from the sat. decoder and passes that to LMCE.

Also note that using the second option you can keep all your sat.decoders and core in one place (a cupboard for instance), while only having the MDs in each room.

For the bathroom, I'd choose a squeezebox or a use squeezeslave on the core.

Tell your boss to spin on it, and pay for a supported system like Dianemo if he can't be bothered to learn it himself. Are you going to maintain it for him as well?? http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,8880.0.html

A good friend of mine asked me to set up an LMCE system in his new £1 million pad (having seen the power of my system in my little house at the nasty end of town), and I refused point blank without hesitation. People don't appreciate the blood, sweat and tears required to get it running the way it does. This isn't the kind of thing you're going to be able to bust out over a weekend and collect the brownie points.

Sorry.

Cheers,
Matt.

Purps : I am not in position to say 'no' :(

Can i avoid using md's and for example use TV's and projectors with DLNA and Wireless LAN Access directly to core or to only one MD located near core ( and give up recording of programs of course).

Then be prepared for this to become a full-time job for you.

You want one MD per display, don't think DLNA is supported yet, although squeezeslaves (for audio only) can be set up on existing MDs. Nothing stopping you from centralising everything though i.e. having all your MDs in one place next to the core with amps etc.

Wired only, wireless is not reliable for PXE booting. Mobile orbiters can be wireless though.

Not sure what you mean by giving up recording programs, that's done by the core independently of MDs, assuming the TV hardware is in the core of course.

Cheers,
Matt.

Hi there,

That's a fairly complex and reasonably large LinuxMCE system and I would really recommend that you spend some time getting familiar with the system and how it is configured before you embark on a system like the one you describe above. Build up your skills and understanding of the system first - maybe even suggest that way forwards to your boss. That way he will see that you are planning and preparing to do the job at a very high quality and if he is clever he will see this as a big advantage and not an issue.

This approach is no reflection on your abilities or technical skills... but jumping straight in at the level of complexity required to configure and setup the system to deliver what you describe above is really almost doomed to fail. Walk first run later is a good motto in this case I'm afraid!

All the best

Andrew

You better get a raise and plan on moving in. ;)

For your own sanity I would highly consider a  Dianemo system.
