Title: Restart after power failure
Post by: gtsupport on June 02, 2011, 01:06:19 pm
Basically as the thread title really, I want to make my core automatically restart after a power failure in the home.  Is there any way to do this, i.e by wake on lan, as I know the router and switch automatically come on after power is restored, or perhaps a better way that somebody knows?

TIA.

Matt. :)

Most BIOSs allow a setting like Restart on Powerloss or similar.

The BIOS is your friend. What mainboard do you have?

Hi Posde,

The motherboard is a Asus M4A87TD Evo AMD 870.  I'm currently at work, wife phoned to say there was a power out, and now can't use the linuxmce.  I tried logging into it from work, but turns out it hasn't switched itself back on.  Will go through the bios when I get home and have a good look.  Google searches suggested that I need a UPS, but 99% of results were Windows or Mac based answers, I know that you can get a lot more from your hardware with Linux.

If I have no joy in the bios, I'll keep digging.
Thanks again.
Matt

If you find that your house is subject to power spikes, etc a small UPS might be a good idea anyway, as it will smooth things out. Plus you get the added bonus of a little bit of battery-powered run time, which if it runs out, isn't a problem as your BIOS will turn it back on again! :)

Cheers,
Matt.

Mine comes on after a power spike OK, but how do I get it to boot through the password? Do I have to disable the password request request on bootup? How? ???

Thanks

Thanks for all the posts, the option was indeed where Posde said it would be, and I altered it last night.  I checked the bios in my work laptop, and that function doesn't appear, guess its too old.  Anyway all is good now, and hopefully this will be an ex-problem.

Thanks again.

Matt.

After last summer when my power was knocked out (for a few seconds at time) 3 or 4 times I invested in a UPS.  The last time this happened I was unable to restart, it had corrupted my install.  A re-install took care of it.

I strongly recommend the use of a UPS for your core
