I have been looking for an all in one home automation and media server solution for a while so when I found LMCE I was amazed that it had everything I wanted. I hope to one day help the community develope it further. The only problem is I don't know my way around Linux so I need some help with the initial install.
1. I download and burn this LinuxMCE-8.10-23759-i386.iso 26-Feb-2011 00:13 3.3G
2. Next Installed it and now I have the desktop. Can someone please explain how to do the next part.
"Internet Installation
Install Kubuntu Intrepid desktop and update it. (download Kubuntu 8.10 desktop release from http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/kubuntu/8.10/kubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso) Currently, only the 32bit version of LinuxMCE is available. Only download the i386 version of 8.10 Kubuntu, even if your system can support 64bit versions. Note: If Kubuntu asks whether you would like to install/activate 'Restricted Drivers' for your video card, ignore it and continue to step 2.
Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file to contain only (from post http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=10917.15 ):
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid main restricted universe multiverse

3. What is the command for this "Run aptitude update and aptitude dist-upgrade to get the latest Kubuntu updates. "
4.What directory is the new installer directory? Grab the latest installer script from here, unpack them and change into the freshly created new-installer directory.
5.How do I do this "Run the following scripts (as root, in order): pre-install-from-repo.sh, mce-install.sh, post-install.sh."
Thank you for your help.

Follow the DVD installation instructions, they are further down the page.
Cheers,
Matt.

I think you still need to check that your sources.list is correct before running the code stated in the DVD section, namely:
sudo su - #This might ask for the password you specified earlier during the install of kubuntu.
apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
To do this open a terminal window and type
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
(nano is a text editor and I find is quite easy to use as a linux noob but you can use others)
if it isn't then edit it. I usually just follow the guide here: http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=10901.0 (http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=10901.0)
then continue on with the rest of the instructions
Good Luck and be patient!!
-
There should be no need to edit the sources.list file. Granted, you will get a 404s on quite a few entries, but that will not hinder the installation, apart from adding a few seconds to the whole ordeal.
-
This is why I started the thread because I am having these issues too.

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Snapshot_overview
These two latest snapshots are confirmed working.
I do not alter sources.list, also the snapshot in the opening post, I cannot find at all.
-
I just downloaded LinuxMCE-8.10-23796-i386.iso 05-Mar-2011 00:14 3.5G | PASS 05-03-2011 I burnt it on a slower setting.
and installed it. After the first reboot it says " GRUB loading, Please wait."
ERROR 22.
This is the second time I have got this message I have downloaded this snapshot twice now on 2 different machines and burnt it using 2 different programs now andd I keep getting the same error.
-
Bad karma :(
"GRUB loading Please wait" indicates a broken download or broken burn process.
-
I think you are right it must be bad karma I set this up on a machine about 3 years ago and it downloaded and installed without a hitch perfectly. Now I can't get it to work to save my life.
-
So now I have gotten this far and receive this message:

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
Now what?
-
Internet working?
-
Yes I am using it right now. Is this when I have to follow the Internet download instructions?
-
Hi,
Using old-releases is necessary. us.archives won't cut it.
Try a snapshot and then edit /etc/apt/sources.list as per...
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installing_0810
then update/dist-upgrade
Cheers
-
I think we need to get our stories straight.
I re-installed yesterday and without updating the sources.list (as directed by Posde) and got a similar set of errors but the install seems to be OK, everything is working but everytime I do an update I get similar error to SomeITGuy.
-
Now we have come full circle to the OP. How do you edit that file and how much of the sources.list do you remove or replace. It will only allow the root to edit it how do you change that? The instructions at this point are missing details for those of us who are well versed in linux.
-
Hi,
Yesterday I updated to the Mar. 7 snapshot 23800 (DVD install).
There is now a 23802 from Mar.7.
The first thing I did was - as root (sudo su -) - edit the /etc/apt/sources.list to reflect the old-releases as in the wiki (previous post).
Then update/dist-upgrade
I did not get all the 404 errors as seen by SomeITGuy.
Cheers.
-
cd /etc/apt
sudo nano sources.list
type your password and edit the file.
To save: Press CTRL-X and then Y

SomeITGuy
read back to my post earlier, I tried to spell it out for a linux noob (like myself) to understand
Once Kubuntu is installed and you have the KDE desktop with the LMCE install icon in front of you, open a terminal window. to do this go to the bottom left (where 'start' would be in Win) click on it and then click on 'applications' and then 'system', thenscroll down to 'Terminal' and click on it.
in the terminal window, type:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
(if you want to copy and paste, 'shift + insert' is paste in the terminal window)
you will be asked for your password, this is the one you created earlier
use the arrow keys to navigate around
make the changes namely change anything that says 'us.archives' or 'security' to 'old-releases'
when you are done 'ctrl + o' saves and 'ctrl + x' to exit
now do:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
once complete run the install icon on the desktop
-
To clearify: You do get the 404 errors, but they are not lethal. The correct repo sources are in the list as well, you do receive all files from those correct sources.
The install works even with those 404s. NO NEED TO EDIT the sources.list, even though it does not hurt to remove the archives, it doesn't hurt to keep them. The difference in installation time neglectable, the cosmetics are worst.
