Title: Insteon
Post by: ggmce on February 04, 2011, 05:07:10 am
I've been searching the forum and wiki regarding Insteon, it looked like there was some momentum behind it for a while, but now I'm getting concerned because I have it throughout my home and it looks like it may not be supported. Does anyone have it working? I unfortunately do not have the programming skill to work on this, and a call to Smarthome did not leave me with the warm and fuzzies...

Please share your experience...

Thanks

Many Insteon devices are currently supported, including the powerlinc modem, switchlinc, lamplinc, and keypadlinc. I do know of at least one user who cannot get the Insteon PLM to work with LinuxMCE, for unknown reasons to me.

Just last month I updated the Insteon PLM drivers to include support for Insteon Motion Sensors. Because of that, I have a good understanding of ddamron's drivers, and I might be able to help you if there is a feature that is not included.

I have also been working on a way to create Insteon groups from the LinuxMCE side of things. Currently, Linuxmce handles Insteon devices within lighting scenarios by sending an ON command to each device separately, so if a room has five lights each one will turn on sequentially about one second apart. The proper way to handle this would be to add those devices to an Insteon group and then send a broadcast command. Also, because the drivers are written in Ruby instead of C++, multithreaded ON commands are also not possible unless someone were to rewrite the drivers in C++. I think there is a version of the driver in C++, but I'm not familiar with that.

Seagullarity,

Do you know if the PLC device (#2414) from Insteon is supported yet? The Wiki indicated inclusion of that device was coming soon but the last update was in 2008. I have been using this device for several years as a standalone controller but am considering transitioning to MCE in order to implement some custom wireless controller technology.

Thanks

UH....

Bump a roo....

I like the idea of using USB over serial... Does it work?
Also does anyone know if the network PLM works?

Thump bump

Is the USB PLM (2413U) supported or only the serial (2413S) version?  I don't have serial in the machine I'm going to use for my core, but I could use a USB>Serial converter.

Thanks!

the usb version just has an onboard usb-rs232 chip, so will show up as a serial port and the serial device should work.
