Title: HD PVR or HDHomeRun? the time has come
Post by: rchamp on January 31, 2011, 06:31:06 pm
OK, so i'm looking to add the last piece to the puzzle to finally make this automation project 'complete'. I am looking to bring in my live tv finally so I (and my wonderful gf) can take full advantage of LMCE without having to switch inputs contantly.

I'm looking at the HD PVR from Hauppauge and the HDHomeRun from silicon dust. Both capture video, but both also have slightly different ways of working.

What are your thoughts out there? I'd like to get as much input as possible before taking the plunge in either direction.

Many thanks,

Ryan

The HD-PVR captures HD video....the HDHomeRun is a dual tuner DVB/ATSC network TV tuner (it does not capture video from another device like a cable box)

All the best

FWIW, I have both.   ;D  I wanted the HD-PVR to capture all of the HD that I subscribe to.  Then later on newegg had a decent sale on the HDHomeRun dual tuner (~$80), so I grabbed it as well.  It doesn't get the encrypted channels, but 90% of what I subscribe to isn't encrypted, and at that price I couldn't say no.

Ok.  Thanks for the input.  I have Comcast in my area,  and it looks like they are encrypting. More and more channels.

What's better to use for the tv portion of LMCE?  That is what I really want to get working :-)
