Title: Why kubuntu install Nvidia drivers, if the video card is ATI?
Post by: Vagner on August 06, 2010, 02:32:03 am
Someone had some experience with an ATI HD 4200?

Most ATI cards aren't supported with linuxMCE or linux in general- ATI just hasn't developed the drivers like nVidia has. Try getting an nVidia card and putting it in.

Ok fair enough, but why not put the drivers where they should be?
Maybe some ati cards will be supported for low ui MD's?

Two half truths:
1) There is no question of supporting or not. It's a bug. Why install the Nvidia driver if the card is not Nvidia? Should install the vesa driver;
2) The ATI developed Catalyst for Linux. I installed on Kubuntu, but it conflicts with the Nvidia driver and could not solve it.

I agree, we know ATI is bad choice, but why make it more hard to install by using the Nvidia drivers.
If somebody wants to pick this up I am willing to test, because I have numerous ATI cards.
