Title: Question about connecting to Web orbiter and admin page in 8.10 outside the home
Post by: fearingsept on June 17, 2010, 08:20:18 pm
I just upgraded from 7.10 to 8.10 recently. I have used 7.10 for about 2 years and had it configured so that I can access my admin page and web orbiter remotely. I have recently tried setting this up in 8.10 and I cannot seem to get it to work.
I went to the security screen and enabled outside connections. I set the port I want to connect on and then I also set up the port forward in the network screen's firewall settings. Just like I used to have to do in 7.10. Everything looks pretty much the same as I remember it. I have done this a few different times since over the last few years I have had to reinstall 7.10 more then once.
Is there a step in 8.10 that I am missing. I have checked the Wiki and i don't see anything different.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have this entry on your firewall rules page in web admin?:

Quote
Protocol  = tcp
Source Port  = 80 to 0
Destination Port  = 0
Destination IP = 0
Rule Type = core_input
Limit to IP = <blank>

Add it if it isn't there then use you external IP address to access web admin as before.

For reference : If you don't have a static IP address you can also use Linuxmce to manage this so even if your IP address changes you can still access your system.  look at the instructions under the 'Dynamic IP Addresses' section of http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Outside_Access (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Outside_Access)

I would recommend doing it using pptp or open vpn, if you' re connecting from wifi spots or lans.... and also enable ssl, to make sure you do it in a secure way....
I do have my mobile phone as an extension of home anywhere, using pptp tunneling.
