H All,
Has anyone tested or using an EeeBox PC EB1501U? Im from South Africa and these are the only "thin clients" i can find.
HP Units I can get from most of my suppliers but they dont have HDMI or SPDIF capabilities.
They also have intergrated ATI graphics cards.
I prefer vesa mountable units, because they are out of sight.
Pls point me in the right direction of obtaining compatible units.

As I understand this is the latest EeeBox from Asus (it sports even USB 3.0). So, it might be a problem to setup it because of new hardware and old Ubuntu.

The ASUS EB1501U is an update of the earlier EB1501 - the only difference is the move to USB 3.0. Apart from that it is the same in terms of it other hardware. We have tested the EB1501 in our Cascade/Dianemo products and they work fine
As with all other Ion based units it will need some work to make the NIC and video stup work correctly in LinuxMCE-0810 - but there are wiki pages about how to fix that eg http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Unrecognized_NIC (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Unrecognized_NIC)

But from what I've been reading a more stable/compatible option would be ZOTAC Ion mini-Itx Motherboards.
Just need to confirm if they are available in South Africa.
The Asus EB1501U Retails for R5600 in SA..... Thats more than have of my salary, so Im looking for cheaper altarnatives.

Well you did not ask about whether this unit is cost effective ;-)
All the Ion-1 units on the market are essentially much the same from a performance perspective. The main advantage of the EB1501's is the integrated optical drive.
Often if you add up the component costs buying a pre-built Ion unit ends up being cheaper than a Mobo plus case/power supply/memory etc.

Not sure whether it would be suitable for a core/hybrid, hopefully somebody else will be able to tell you that (I would have thought so mind, make sure you get a second NIC sorted though). Do you intend on running other MDs off it? If so, maybe considering getting the miniITX now as a hybrid, then get a normal desktop for your core with a bit more grunt at a later date when funds permit. The miniITX can then be used as an MD.
With regards to your PSU question, some cases have them included, but this is reflected in the cost. If you don't care about bulkiness, then just use any old PSU that you may have laying around, or pick one up nice and cheap. Personally, I have built my own case for my miniITX board, and have sourced a 1U PSU off ebay so everything stays nice and thin - the whole lot is then bolted to the back of my TV via the VESA mount. They are very, very cheap (£15 for 180W!), and do a good job of powering the system. That said, I am using my miniITX mobo as an MD, not a core/hybrid (but get one with sufficient power output, and I'm sure that'll be fine).

I ran one for 5-6 months i used a 80 gb ssd drive with it.
It works fairly well as dedicated core however orbiter regens are very painfull... around 15 minutes per orbiter.
and running as a hybrid would be even worse.
I have bounced around with various configurations and just got a x2 240e 45w cpu
and will be using that with maybe my ssd or perhaps a wd raptor.

Did you managed to source any Zotac mobo's?
Then as for the EeeBox PC EB1501U, I presume you wanted to use it as a media director only and not as a core/hybrid?
I want to make a start and if I'm not successful a Eeebox will be much more useful to me than a desktop.
