Title: LinuxMCE for Hostel
Post by: HoneyBee on June 02, 2010, 06:16:46 pm
Hi Friends,

I am new to LinuxMCE and this is my first post. I have seen the video 704, and gone through the website and wiki pages before asking the question. If I am asking the obvious, my apologies in advance.

I am planning to implement LinuxMCE for a 50 room/user hostel. Below are my basic needs, similar to in-flight entertainment.

[1] Users can browse and play their own videos/music from their in-room media directors. The media will be stored centrally in the core server.

[2] Users can browse and view live TV channels distributed by the core.

I understand LinuxMCE is made for home, and probably for less number of users.

[1] Can LinuxMCE handle a 50 users load?

[2] If not, can multiple core servers handle different set of media directors, but manage same media collection in a NAS?

[3] Are there alternatives to LinuxMCE available for the above purpose?

Please advise.

Thanks
Bee

Re Above
Yes thats certainly possible - we've looked at similar sized projects before.

[2] Users can browse and view live TV channels distributed by the core.
Re Above
Yes that again is possible with certain modifications to the standard TV architecture to allow the scalability required.

Re Above
Yes again thats certainly possible - it just means scaling up & possibly distributing functions from a single Core to a number of separate centrally located systems.

[2] If not, can multiple core servers handle different set of media directors, but manage same media collection in a NAS?
Re Above
That approach is really not very practical - but scaling up and distributing processes/functionality across several processors in centralised system would.

[3] Are there alternatives to LinuxMCE available for the above purpose?
Re Above
Well yes there are...but they would be either much more costly or very much more limited in capability...or both of these.

Please advise.
