Title: Can't see media files on usb pen drive
Post by: ariel_fernando on May 08, 2010, 08:23:21 pm
Hi all,

I'm working on LinuxMCE 8.10 (core/hybrid) and I'm having problems to view media files on my usb pen drive.
When I plugged it, nothing happend.  What can I do?

From Kde desktop, it's works fine.  Pen drive is automounted, and you can browse device with Dolphin.

FYI: I'm working on a fresh installation from DVD, and I downloaded it yesterday.  Before run installation script, I did run apt-get update / apt-get dist-upgrade.

Thanks!.

This is not the best practice to access media
Upload the media to your core. Access it through samba and put the files in the corresponding folders of the linuxmce's file structrure.

There was a fix for FAT drives done in the last update, which allows FAT drives without UUID to be detected by LMCE, as long as they have a label. Check that your drive has a label. If it does, LMCE should popup a device detected screen.

But you probably wont be able to see the files on your disk. In the device detected screen, you can select between "Use LMCE directory structure" and "Make all public", none of these will make the files on the drive available in the audio or video section of LMCE (unless perhaps if they already is in a LMCE directory structure).

...and of course there is still no integrated support for removable media at all. This is an area that needs to be worked on to be frank. To not support PnP storage media is something we need to work towards fixing.

All the best

Thanks for your reply!.

Do you know which package and version have the fix for FAT?.
I run apt-get update / apt-get upgrade but all packages on my system are on their last versions.  My three pen drives are labeled, but nothing happens when I plug them, never popup a device detected screen.
(I'm seeing device detected screen when I puting a CD or DVD, but not with pen drive)

Bongowongo said that this is not the best practice to access media file on pen drives (or cams, or any external mass storage).  But I'm confusing, do you mean that always I'm must mount manually the pen drive and then copy media files to hdd (using console or kde desktop)?.

Regards,

The best practice currently for pen drives or other detachable PnP storage devices is to attach them to a non-MD machine on the LAN. Then copy their contents to the /home/public/data/... on your Core's share etc.

All the best

Thanks Andrew!.

But, in my situation, I've only 1 pc installed in my living-room working like an hybrid system.  I haven't keyboard or mouse connected, just a remote control. So, I'm wanting to get an easy method to use media files.  Something like "put and play", just DVD players with support for pen drives.  Is it possible with LMCE?.

Yes, fixing this has been climbing on my priority list for a while, but not enough time  :(
