Hi Folks,

I just have a couple of questions about the way the forums are set up.

First up, I see I am now a "Guru". Nothing could be further from the truth. How is this calculated? Purely on number of posts? It a serious question since these tags give new users an idea of who really knows their stuff and has been around MCE a while.

Next, I have a Karma of something like -43.  :'( Is this because people keep "smite"ing me? It's a shame coz if you were to meet me, you'd find I'm actually quite laid-back and most people who know me seem to think I'm quite a nice guy! (Honest!) Again, where does this value come from?

The board clock. It tells me the time is currently 11:39:14pm GMT-1. That's not correct. (I'm in the UK at the moment, which is currently GMT+1, and it's 16:39, so the clock is out by 3 hours or there abouts by my calculation) I know it's a little thing, but it irritates the hell out of me (even though I'm a laid back kind of guy  ;)) I'm not sure where the server is, but can we either set the clock correctly or set the timezone correctly? Please?

Thanks!
Paul

Yes, the 'guru' status is done via number of posts.

Karma is done by smites.

You can change the timezone for your account in your preferences.

I think this should be reviewed. Seriously! Just because I've posted a lot, doesn't mean I know what I'm talking about (or vice versa) and this can give a false impression of the weight that should be applied to someone's opinions.

Oh  :'( I've obviously p****d someone off (probably the devs in the thread about documentation and management). I see I got 4 stars though! I wonder how I got those :-) Someone else has been smiteing me too! (Down to -44 Karma) - I could get paranoid!

I know that, the point is that the clock is wrong. It says (now) that it is 12:00 GMT-1, when it is actually 15:00 GMT-1. I can trick it by telling it (incorrectly) my timezone is GMT+5, but.....

Just done some digging around in my profile and it would seem the timezone is what is incorrect. I changed my offset to make the time correct, but it still says "GMT-1"!!!

Very odd.

Howso?

I think my comments about status are valid and, may I say, relevant.

As for the time thing - what message does it give the casual visitor if we can't get that right?

I'm glad I've managed to provide some amusement though ;D

On the time thing: In your profile you can set the 'offset'.  I used 'autodetect' and it correctly entered -8 as I'm in California.  The time for me is now correct.  It does still say GMT-1 next to the time but I'm guessing that is indicating the time zone the server is in, not my time zone.

On Karma: I wouldn't worry about it too much, as you can see, most people have negative karma (including people I know to be helpful and informed).  It's a system where anybody can 'smite' you so it's easy to rack up negative karma.

On the posting rank:  The titles themselves are a bit misleading, yes.  However, anyone that has used any forums should understand that it refers to number of posts and in general it is a good indication of LMCE experience.  The thinking being that even if you're not a dev, the fact that you have 150+ posts shows that you've been around and will have at least a good general knowledge of the system.  A reply from you would carry more weight to a brand new user than a reply from someone with 4 posts as you've obviously been around longer and have probably seen the issue yourself or seen a thread in which someone else has had the issue.

P.S.
I can relate to the OCD like concerns, my thing is open cabinets and drawers.  A desk drawer left 1/2" open drives me bonkers.  Dunno why.  :)

I guess you're right. It all just seems very odd to me and, like I said, what impression does it give to the casual visitor?

That's not OCD! If you leave it open then the network gremlins can get out. If you look into the darkness in the drawer opening, you can see their green glowing eyes staring back at you! FEAR the gremlins - keep drawers closed!!!!  ;D ;D ;D

For the most part post count does reflect experience with lmce.

Unless the posts are all questions ;)

Point taken. Can someone reset my post count, please?

BTW, what do the stars refer to? (Just curious)

i think for each level you start with no stars and work up to 5. so if your a guru with 4.5 stars that means your close to the next level.

Just a guess though.
